Art on the shelf this week

Here are two activities that I have out on the shelf for use this week, both having to do with leaves.

Because we dont have one of those cool rainbow stamp pads, I chose to use paint for making multicolored leaves. We have a foam leaf stamp (good because it can be washed off after), a small paint brush, a jar for washing the brush after each color is applied and a sponge for brush dabbing and mess wiping. My daughters just dip the brush into the paint and apply to various areas of the stamp.

The leaves are very colorful and different every time paint is applied onto the stamp. I supplied large paper so that the stamp could be used multiple times.

Our playstand is set up for fall and it is the perfect spot for the googly eyed leaves I saw over at The Magic Onions last week. They are so simple and fun to make that I set up a tray for making them on the activity shelf.

Weve been collecting and pressing leaves. I added some to the tray along with googly eyes, a hole punch (for a mouth) a small container of glue, and a small brush for applying the glue. We have these little leaf peepers all over the house!

Back on the trainer

We did a family trip up to Upstate NY this Easter. The weather was a little cold and I didnt feel like packing up all my associated gear. It was nice opportunity to actually bring the trainer though and get a little bit of a workout in order to justify the extra holiday food.

I havent done structured intervals for some time now. Im trying to follow a full Morris interval program in order to stay sometwhat in shape. A structured plan is helpful when life is so busy that it is too easy to just say forget about it. These intervals can be hard but are very time efficient.

I actually set my power level pretty conservative on these first ones. One reason was to just successfully complete the entire workout, rather than burn out and have to bag the last ones. The first few intervals are always hard and there is a point about 2 weeks in where the supercompensation starts to take affect and I can up the power settings at least 10W.

Well see how long the plan lasts but at least for the last few days it went well. If the weather is nice, I will probably opt for a lunch ride on some steep hills, either way itll help to maintain some fitness.

Avadon Is Out On Steam!

Today, Avadon: The Black Fortress goes live on Steam.

Unsurprisingly, Im pretty excited about it. After 16 years of being a tiny, invisible, basement-dwelling bottom feeder, for a few precious weeks, I get to act like Im a real developer. With a real distributor, a nice trailer video, and everything. Yes, there will be money, and thats always nice, but its the recognition Im sort of focused on now.

Writing Indie games has provided me with a very good living, and I dont have the right to complain about anything. I wrote games. I sold 8-10 thousand games a year. (Having a big back catalog is awesome.) I was content.

But then the Indie boom took off. Indie devs were getting famous. Many could make a living, and some got rich. Amazingly, people stopped acting like I wasnt a total loser for doing what I do. (This change happened about the time the word shareware disappeared.) After all these years, it was impossible to watch all of this excitement and not want to be a part of it.

And now, thanks to Valve, Im going to be visible. Im getting a shot at the spotlight. Avadon: The Black Fortress is a very good game. Its got a great story, interesting, epic battles, and a lot of cool stuff. Its simply a fun game. Will its retro old-school action take the world by storm? Maybe a lot. Maybe a little. And Ill do all I can to be content with what comes.

The Steam Thing does mean that we are embarking on a great experiment, something that we never planning on doing. But, the way the online games market is moving, something that seems like the right choice.

Avadon: The Black Fortress Is $9.99 On Steam

Ive written a lot about how I think its important to not price niche games too cheaply, and I stand by that. However, at the same time, Avadon will be only ten bucks on Steam, the cheapest weve ever made our newest game for PC/Mac. Why?

1. Steam felt it was the best price. I went into this trusting their judgment, because they know a lot more about selling Indie games than I do. When youre an Indie and Steam comes knocking, you dont say no.

2. The whole game industry is shifting. These days, a huge proportion of games online are sold for a low price without demos. People buy games on impulse, sight unseen. That way, if they dont like it they arent out a lot of money.

In these markets, charging $15 or $20 for games, like I want to, isnt feasible. Its too much money to pay for a game you arent sure about. If someone buys my game for $10 and hates it, Im a little unhappy. But $20? I dont want to take kids allowance money that way.

So Im charging $10 on Steam and for the iPad. By the standards of that market, its a hefty price, enough for me to earn my living. Its cheap enough to work as an impluse buy. It isnt the $1 or $2 price that Im still sure would put me out of business.

This means I need to adjust the prices I charge on my own web site. I have changed the price of Avadon to $20, and in the future we will very likely reduce the prices of our earlier games as well. Our next game, Avernum: Escape From the Pit will start out at $20. If this grand experiment works well, we may make future games cheaper still, though I doubt any new game on our own web site will ever go below $15.

Im expecting that some of our users who paid $25 on our site will be angry. I can totally understand this. However, all computer games get cheaper as they get older, even games that have only been to a few months. (Check out Best Buy of any other decently sized electronics store if you dont believe me.) Also, until we had access to mass-market outlets like iTunes, we were never going to generate enough sales to survive at a lower price.

I dont like making my fans angry, but, again, when Steam comes knocking, you dont say no. And our future games will be cheaper, so everyone is getting something out of it.

Now Ill sit on my edge of chair and wait to see how Avadon does. Fortunately, theres not much suspense. Were being released opposite Bastion, so hope may not be warranted at this point.

A Question a Lot of People Asked Below:

Why is the game still $20 on our web site?

Short answer: Charging this little is an experiment. I believe that Indie devs who write niche products need to charge more for their work than the more mass market, casual, $0.99 app market. The question is whether a $10 price works. If going onto Steam for ten bucks turns out to not be a good idea (or if they dont want any more of our games), we need to maintain a higher baseline price on our site.

I know this seems odd, but I assure you that it makes sense from where I sit. And, by the way, we are FAR from the only developer who does this. For example, World of Goo is $20 on their site but $10 on Steam. And they are far smarter than we are.

Assorted Thoughts on Financial Regulation

The financial regulatory reform debate is starting to kick into high gear, and I hope to bang out a post on financial reform this weekend. But in the meantime, here are a few general (and somewhat random) thoughts relating to financial reform:

My nomination for the Ten Worst Decisions in the Financial Crisis List (you know, if that list existed, which I think it should): Citis decision to bail out its SIVs and bring over $100bn in toxic assets back onto its balance sheet. Really this was Vikram Pandits decision — the day after he was appointed CEO, he decided to bail out the biggest Citi-managed SIVs and bring ~$50bn in toxic assets back onto Citis balance sheet (reversing the banks previous position, which had been that it wouldnt bail out investors in SIVs without liquidity puts). If youre wondering how Citi ended up with so many toxic assets, and how regulators missed such a massive build-up of risk on Citis balance sheet, this is your answer. This is also why Im somewhat sympathetic to the regulators (in this case, the NY Fed). For supervisory purposes, all these toxic assets were gone from Citis balance sheet, because these were true-sale securitizations to bankruptcy-remote SIVs. Then, all of the sudden, the toxic assets were back on Citis balance sheet. And its understandable that regulators didnt foresee that Citi would voluntarily agree to buy back $100bn in assets that it had previously sold in true-sale securitizations.
Its true that the idea that "whats good for Wall Street is good for America" has been disproved, but that does NOT prove the opposite—that is, it doesnt prove that "whats bad for Wall Street is good for America." Its frightening how many commentators fail to grasp this distinction. Which brings me to...
Cutting into Wall Streets profit margins shouldnt be an explicit goal of financial reform. In other words, we shouldnt look for where the Street has the highest profit margins, and then say, "OK, now how can we cut into those profits?" In most instances, enacting sensible regulation based on an objective weighing of the evidence will lower Wall Streets profit margins anyway. But the fact that the Street is going to profit from a particular regulatory change doesnt necessarily make the regulatory change ineffective, or insufficiently "tough on Wall Street." One argument I hear a lot on OTC derivatives is that we need to push them onto exchanges rather than clearinghouses because Wall Street would still make fat profits if they just went through clearinghouses. Thats not a coherent argument for why public policy should require exchange-trading for standardized OTC derivatives.

Ill address OTC derivatives reform more this weekend.

Atif Aslam’s Euphonious Single Pehli Dafa Is out A Turmoil Is Ahead Due To ban On Pak Artists

Do you remember Atif Aslam’s kuch is tarah? Well the singer is back with another soulful number. The teaser of Atif Aslams new song is released. Here at CRB Tech Reviews we bring you all the updates about the release and the disturbances created as there is a current ban on Pak artists.

Titled Pehli Dafa, the song has beautiful cinematography and features Ileana D’Cruz and Atif Aslam. The teaser lasts is for eighteen seconds but is enough to create turmoil when the video gets released on January 2017.

We were surprised to see this teaser because there has been a ban imposed on Pakistani artistes from working in everything in Indian since last year’s cowardly Uri attacks. Following the attacks, many nationalists issued an open threat to Karan Johar and an informal warning to the Bollywood filmmakers.

In fact Karan Johar was asked to re-shoot scenes in his movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that starred Fawad Khan. Even the nationalists went ahead to threaten the release of the said film and others like Raees and Dear Zindagi , all of which featured Pakistani artists. Later Karan Johar released a public apology and had to bow down to their terms and conditions such that his film gets a smooth release. Fawad Khan’s role in ADHM was also was badly chopped.

The Pakistani artists’ issue resurfaced with Mahira Khan’s presence in Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees. Shah Rukh Khan had to give in to the demands of MNS and had to assure that she won’t be in the promotions. Now we wonder what these nationalists gonna do considering Atif Aslam is one of the most famous Pak in India.

Or he will be ignored as a pre Uri Pak talent, and that he lent his voice in so many Hindi numbers, his video won’t get much disappointment! Many of us are fans of Atif Aslam and his voice did away with the Bollywood monotony. Well the video is a soulful music composition by Shiraz Uppal and the words are penned by Shakeel Sohail. To mention Atif Aslam’s tere sang yaara earned loads of applause and touched millions of hearts.

To say the song is fabulous and Atif has again touched many hearts by singing this song, as he has most the attractive voice in industry. Atif Aslam tu jaane na was also a blockbuster number and we hum even now.

The shooting of the song has been done in exotic locations and it really looks amazing on screen when we watch the song. Atif Aslam toota jo kabhi tara was also very beautiful and remarkable. Let’s see how this video goes with people.

Atif as usual looks handsome while Ileana appears gorgeous in the song, and they both complement each other. The song will take you down the memory lanes when you felt in love for the first time.

Did you hear Atif Aslam’s tajdar-e-haram? Well that is a pleasing number too. Let’s see if this song melts everybody’s heart or sets on fire! Time will say that.

Azadeh Zohrabi on CA Hunger Strikers Solitary Confinement and Herman Wallace

Azadeh Zohrabi has almost 10 years of experience visiting and advocating for people in California’s prisons. During this time, she has worked on a range of issues including improving the conditions of confinement for pregnant women and limiting the use of solitary confinement in both juvenile and adult institutions.

Azadeh recently graduated from UC Hastings College of the Law and was awarded a Soros Justice Fellowship to work with Legal Services for Prisoners with Children on minimizing the use of long term solitary confinement in California. She is the author and co-author of two scholarly articles: Resistance and Repression: The Black Guerrilla Family in Context, and Creating the “Bad Mother”: How the U.S. Approach to Pregnancy in Prisons Violates the Right to be a Mother. Azadeh has been inspired by LSPC’s work long before she even thought about law school and is grateful for the opportunity to work with such experienced, dedicated and passionate advocates.

Ariad v Lilly Appellants Brief and Follow On Biologics

Ariads brief in this important Federal Circuit en banc rehearing of Araid v. Lilly, which asks the court to consider revising or perhaps completely eliminating written description as a separate requirement of patentability is available here. I have not had a chance to read it yet, but will post some commentary once I do.

APs U Turn on Swiss Challenge Method

AP Government took the call to withdraw the earlier notifications inviting competitive bids under the Swiss Challenge Method to develop the core capital of Amaravati.

On July 17th this year, Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) issued a notification inviting proposals to develop the start-up area in AP Capital in competition with the deal offered by the Singapore Consortium. Soon, Aditya Housing & Infrastructure Development Ltd and Envian Engineers Pvt Ltd approached the High Court complaining how could they place the bids if the revenue share offered by Singapore Consortium wasnt disclosed. Later, AP Government issued another notification on August 28th.

A Single Judge issued a stay order on both these notifications after reaching a conclusion that AP Government isnt transparent. The court also opined that maintaining secrecy on revenue share offered by Singapore Consortium doesnt comply with the provisions of either AP Infrastructure Development Enabling Act & Swiss Challenge Method.

Thereafter, AP Govt challenged the Single Judge order. During the hearing, AP Attorney General Srinivas informed the Court that State Government has decided to withdraw the notifications inviting competitive bids under Swiss Challenge Method. He added, Govt has made few amendments to AP Infrastructure Development Enabling Act and will issue fresh notifications inviting bidders soon.
