Art on the shelf this week
Art on the shelf this week
Here are two activities that I have out on the shelf for use this week, both having to do with leaves.
Because we dont have one of those cool rainbow stamp pads, I chose to use paint for making multicolored leaves. We have a foam leaf stamp (good because it can be washed off after), a small paint brush, a jar for washing the brush after each color is applied and a sponge for brush dabbing and mess wiping. My daughters just dip the brush into the paint and apply to various areas of the stamp.

The leaves are very colorful and different every time paint is applied onto the stamp. I supplied large paper so that the stamp could be used multiple times.
Our playstand is set up for fall and it is the perfect spot for the googly eyed leaves I saw over at The Magic Onions last week. They are so simple and fun to make that I set up a tray for making them on the activity shelf.
Weve been collecting and pressing leaves. I added some to the tray along with googly eyes, a hole punch (for a mouth) a small container of glue, and a small brush for applying the glue. We have these little leaf peepers all over the house!

Art and creativity
Art and creativity

Lately I have this new bug. Art. I mean, Ive touched art my whole life one way or another, but always in a second place kind of way. Looking at capoeira was more through the philosophical, warrior, sports eyes than through artistic eyes for me, although my capoeira is very much aesthetics oriented.
Now in the past couple of weeks Ive started to touch more the artistic side. It is simply what makes me tick now. I want to see beautiful capoeira with true self expression, and not only strong, quality and even communicative capoeira. Thats not enough any more.
In order to do that, and in a typical idoish style, Ive decided to get inspiration and knowledge in other places besides capoeira and to bring this into my own capoeira. Im learning a lot of diffrent artistic manifestations and their special creative touch. Im after creating something that is not present anywhere else - the most creative capoeira ever. The idea is to improve and touch every aspect of capoeira in that sense. The musical aspect, the movement and dance, Ginga, artistic interaction, Capoeira show, rythem, facial experssion, and more.
Of course there are many examples of very artistic capoeiristas over the years, (most are CDO or angoleiros, some are from old-school styles and groups) but I want to bring my own thing to the table, and this is another reason for me to cross train in other arts.
Keep tuned to future projects concerning this new craze, some photos and videos and other material...
BTW, a new workshop is being organized by us in Hacasa, a workshop of rythem and movement in an old-new context. It will be held in Hacasa during 4 subsequent Saturdays and will be instructed by Michael Feigenbaum from the Mayumana group. http://www.mayumana.com/
It will combine afro-brasilian rythems with some newer funk-hiphop feel into a dance and instrumental play. Should be a blast. Special prices for the Hacasa students and limited 15 spots for every cycle of the workshop. Keep tuned for more details, first meeting at the 14th of Oct. Registration at the office: 04-8373340. Leave a message and well get back to you. See you there.

Art Love Lauren Mabry Abstract Ceramic Artist
Art Love Lauren Mabry Abstract Ceramic Artist

Well, well well. Its been far too long, my friends.
Almost three years ago I accepted a part-time position in the travel industry, a very long and involved story. It was not the best time, I was quite busy with clients, but such a great opportunity I accepted, thinking I could "do it all" - why do we do this to ourselves?! It became much more than part-time, and really began to take over the part of my life that allowed me to blog and pursue my true passion, which is design and colour. That incredibly hectic lifestyle also led to a move and several other life changes.

So. Although this family loves the benefits of highly affordable travel, a decision was made this summer to drastically scale that back in order to get back to my true love, which is this!
Hope you will all join me as I venture back into the blogosphere there have been so many luscious things happening, and I have a backlog of about a million interesting bits bookmarked for blog posts!
The first of which is the work of Lauren Mabry. A combination of abstract paintwork and ceramic, Lauren has taken the humble cylinder and wall plaque to another level. Top of the wish list, friends!

Rather beautiful, arent they? I love the originality here. Nothing got under my skin more as an art student than a professor insisting on doing things the "correct" way. Art is about taking a medium and making, about putting a little bit of your soul into something. When artists throw out the rulebook they share gorgeousness like this with the rest of us
Now just need to work out how to add an installation like above into the budget, lol!
Best, Anne-Marie

Art Blocks for Ghana
Art Blocks for Ghana

Watercolor and Pencil on watercolor board mounted on wood panel.
Been Swamped. Been playing catch up for the last month and headspace is on work most days. A sobering weekend to be sure and its made me wake up. Also, not seeing my friends from when we used to carpool from the city, separated by three projects over three buildings--yada yada yada. I contributed to this amazing auction with all these amazing artists. Please give this a look.
The Picture Book Project Foundation presents Art Blocks for Ghana a charity art auction of original works created by top artists within the animation and illustration community to provide boarding and education for orphaned children in Ghana, West Africa. Online art auction coming March 12-20. 2011.
So, you might want to throw in and the best part is that you could end up with amazing original art. But really, even better than that you are helping in the lives of children who really need it.
Bid here.
The great Dice Tsutsumi lead the charge on this effort but also set the bar with this beauty.
Enrico loves Japan so much he can draw a street scene from memory. Check out Enricos art block
My contribution. Finished over a plane ride back from Argentina.
The Picture Book Project Foundation will also be donating part of the proceeds from Art Blocks auction and events to help in the awareness and support Dice Tsutsumis efforts and Give2Asia.

Art Is Definitely A Real Thing OK
Art Is Definitely A Real Thing OK
I am waiting for the plumber.
He was meant to be here twenty-five minutes ago but has not showed up, and frankly I am beginning to feel rather rejected.
I wasnt sure whether or not he would need to turn off the water so, just in case, I have filled the kettle and two pints glasses full of water, imagining somehow that I might die of thirst between now and 11.30 when I have to leave for work, that Ben will come home to find me strewn across the floor like a bison, all ribs and woe.
(Some time later)
He is here now. Very, very clatterbangcrash-based activity going on upstairs. I am crouching over my computer trying to ignore the fact that almost as soon as he arrived and therefore I could no longer use (ahem) the facilities, I began to need a panic-wee. I am ludicrous.
He is big with big boots on, and has brought into the house a massive trolley with what can only be described as tools on it. Loads, though, not just the ones I understand like screwdrivers and hairdryers. I am a bit in awe of him. He can just wander into someones house with loads of bits of metal (welded specifically to be useful) and understand how a bath works and what to clatterbangcrash to make it into a shower.
I, on the very stark other hand, am nervously writing about him on the Internet. What forking paths we take. (Please note: forking to mean diverging, rather than a pretend swear.)
I am relieved that I am teaching this afternoon, so at least I can feel like I am giving something to society.
Yesterday I had an excellent day of working on The Project: 2012, which is a show that I am, along with two excellent friends, taking to Edinburgh next year for the festival. We are working together in some respects but each of us is creating our own work. My show is going to be about £$^*&()*_)*%£ %^&((* %^£@£&*@ &%$%$^*()%$$^^.
(I am not able to say it yet, because I am too scared. I have been practising saying HELLO I AM AN ARTIST AND THIS IS WHAT MY WORK IS ABOUT without wanting to throw up. What always happens is that I mumble something about a cello and then quickly say that I also teach so we can talk about teaching rather than AAAAAAAHHHHHRRRT (vomit) because its much, much, much easier and doesnt involve spontaneous panic-weeing.)
Yesterday was cool, though. I did, like, stuff and it was good. Part of it involves trawling the wide-eyed archives of this blog, which is pretty forking embarrassing, I can tell you. I quite like doing it, particularly because its for my ahrt and so not as self-indulgent as it could be. Although it is still pretty self-indulgent. Sometimes thats OK, perhaps.
Oh God. Is it acceptable to ask the plumber to wait outside the bathroom so I can have a wee? I might just risk implosion and wait until I get to the station, which also will cost me 30p. Maybe I will ask for some wee-money for Christmas.
(Some more time later)
Oh my God he just left the flat, not saying when he was coming back, so I locked the door to the flat and dashed upstairs (I would have just locked the door to the bathroom, but it was propped open heavily. I am not so mental that I have to lock the front door every time I have a wee). I wonder whether he has just intuited that I needed a wee so discreetly left for a bit. That must be the sign of someone who is good at their job.
This is all too dramatic for me when I have work to do. I cannot concentrate at all. My concentration ability must be extremely flimsy.
I am going to go and do some ahhhrt before I do my teaching (LOOK I AM NOT A WASTER I HAVE A REAL JOB LOVE ME LOVE ME VALIDATE ME, etc etc).
Off you go, do something excellent.

Art Smells Like Flan
Art Smells Like Flan
I decided to take myself along to the Whitworth Art Gallery today. It had been the first day of breatheinbreatheout no stress for a while.
I wandered around for a while, very aware of the fact that it was shutting in twenty minutes. I had loads of time, really, but I was irked by the feeling that some be-polo-shirted employee could, at any moment, tap me on the shoulder and tell me to leave. This, of course, would have been fine, I would have left. I do not have a history of gallery tantrums. It is unlikely that I would have started screaming and windmilling, demanding to be allowed to finish perusing the series of tree-themed paintings. Still, when I came to realize that I was spending more time thinking about that than appreciating the art, I left.
(Also I find the Whitworth gallery always smells overpoweringly of school canteen flan.)
I sat outside on a picnic bench next to my bike (Glinda). I tried to feel arty, to channel some inspiration from the tree paintings I had just seen, but before long realized I was sitting next to the open window of the ladies toilet, through which I could hear someone scrubbing the floors and complaining. Also just in front of me was parked a slightly grubby Ford Focus. It was just starting to turn from a eye-splittingly bright spring day to a nose-searingly chilly spring evening. I gave up and went home.
This morning I played my cello for an hour. Last Friday I was part of a performance by Manchester collective rift cuts, at the Yard Theatre in Hulme. There was brilliant poetry and a warm audience. (My favourite line of the show came from Vanessa Fay "when we laugh/its like the sun smacking the sky/with diamond knuckles")* I played my cello while people were coming in, and then played and sang one of my songs in the middle. It was cool. I mean, cool, like actually really cool (for me). It sort of just clicked, that playing and singing thing. I felt liberated and comfortable. Today I practiced, and sang. Belted open strings and matched it with a wide, open voice. Tried scribbling about up the top of the range and plucking strings, and bowing tricky, happy rhythms. Matching and mismatching voice and strings. It was fun. When Ben gets back after he has been in Devon for two whole weeks** we will no doubt try beatboxing (him) and looping stuff up and generally being very high tech and excellent (also him).
Right. I only really started this blog post so I could have something to do to get me to a time I wouldnt feel guilty about opening some wine, and its now ten past seven! In fact I have just heard Ben sneak out of the study and clink something, so I suspect he might have had precisely the same idea. I must investigate at once.
*This may not be accurate, but anyway it was brilliant, whatever it actually was.
**Two whole weeks! This is a problem because since living with him I have entirely forgotten how to cook and therefore may well starve to death.

Art Lebedev LCD Keyboard
Art Lebedev LCD Keyboard

Just to prove that some gadgets fanatics have not yet been affected by the economic crisis, gizmo flashy designer Art Lebedev has revealed yet another beautiful keyboard loaded with customizable LCD screens.
The new Optimus Popularis just been unveiled on the Optimus Project Live Journal, showing a keyboard that is similar in size and shape to an old ZX Spectrum 48K. Unlike the Optimus Maximus full-size keyboard, the Popularis has a basic typing keyboard with standard F-keys, cursor keys and both Windows and Apple keys.
There is no numeric keypad, but you can press the Fn key to effectively treat a portion of the layout as a numeric keypad if you want. There is also no sign of the buttons End Insert, Home and PgUp and PgDn and, although these characteristics are secondary functions of other keys too.
Of course, the key function is secondary to the way they look on such a device, and this time apparently each key LCD comes with more real estate compared to the Maximus, including the space bar.
Not only that, but there is also another LCD between the F-keys and standard keyboard, which we assume is customizable to display all kinds of widgets. In the published photo, it is shown displaying weather forecasts, stock prices and an email alert and graphics to the CPU and memory.
Of course, this kit elite piece is not going to be cheap, but it is apparently going to be significantly cheaper than the Optimus Maximus. According to Art Lebedev, it will cost less than $ 1,000 (£ 668.74). Okay, so its still a ridiculous amount for a keyboard, but its much cheaper than the $ 2.400 (£ 1.605) required for Maximus.
The Optimus Maximus took several years to finally surface after the first pictures were made out, but Art Lebedev believes it will not be long before the new compact keyboard is available to buy. According to the website, the Optimus Popularis will be available for pre-order or at the end of the beginning of the next.

art journaling in the wild with mary
art journaling in the wild with mary

Theres something about summertime that always gets my wanderlust heart aching to explore + adventure + just get out of normal routine. Fields of wildflowers, the sounds of crickets and rushing creek water, sunsets and full moons, cool night breezes and wide-open roads
hello inspiration!

Whether we are exploring our own backyard, or road tripping across the state- if theres one thing I must bring with me, it is a small bag of art journaling supplies! Just the essentials
but enough to let my soul out to play, record, and document beauty + inspiration as we journey.
Bringing my art journal along on our adventures really helps me to slow down and take in the beauty that surrounds. It is the surest way to re-fill the inspiration tank and come home with new ideas and a refreshed spirit.
Before I became a mama, I used to bring a TON of art supplies with me. But these days, juggling diaper bags and snacks and of course, the baby(!) has really made me identify which supplies I can live without. It is so incredibly freeing to create with just a few favorite supplies!

Art of Cover Art
Art of Cover Art
People say it all the time: Cover art sells books.
When I paid Carl Graves $400 to do the cover for Magnificent Guns of Seneca 6, it wasnt because I think hes a nice guy. He IS a nice guy, but thats beside the point. I did it because I want to do JA Konrath numbers.
It forced me to take a long, hard look at some of my other titles and come to the realization that they werent selling well because their cover art stunk. Not that I hadnt tried, and yes, they had kind of a pulpy appeal, but they werent polished (in any sense of the word) and people did not buy the books at the rate I want.
The other thing I was interested in doing was creating a uniformity in the Superbia series. Unfortunately, to do that, I had to deep six Glendon Haddixs original Superbia cover (that cost over $200). And losing it wasnt a slam against GH. Its an investment in the future of the series, and a bridge between the first book and the sequels.
The covers are slowly (slooooowly) making their way onto If you want to take a sneak peak at them, I set up a Pinterest page here. Take a look and tell me which one is your favorite.
To give you an example of the changes, heres a few before and afters:

Art and Truth
Art and Truth
An unbelieved truth can hurt a man much more than a lie. It takes great courage to back truth unacceptable to our times. Theres a punishment for it, and its usually crucifixion.
? John Steinbeck, East of Eden
Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.
? Warren W. Wiersbe
Silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly.
? Mahatma Gandhi
Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.
? William Faulkner
It is probably safe to say that there are probably as many definitions of art as there are artists. One answer that makes intense sense of the arguments and perspectives is that Art is Self expression. Note the capital S there, meaning true Self or to put it another way, Art is expression of truth.
Craft is another thing, of course, chiefly skill in communication, related to style, technique, structure, and so forth. Deep subject, complementary to but separate from the first.
There was recently a Facebook discussion that suggested that the purpose of art is to confront, upset, destroy the status quo, and so forth. Consider the possibility that these things are NOT the purposethey are the effect. Human beings slide into a dreaming state rather rapidly, a place rife with mythologies and justifications. Any real truthabout relationships, politics, spirituality, actions, or whatever, will conflict with much of these illusions, and be uncomfortable to those comforted thereby.
An artist, from this perspective, has the obligation to have not only craft (to express) but a point of view (something worth expressinga perspective on truth the artist is willing to defend or express during his career.)
Because it will require fantastic energy and focus to dig deep enough to find a truth worth sharing, it is valuable to focus on something that is deeply meaningful to you: a pain, hope, dream, fear, love something that engages the passions so strongly that you wont stop with the easy answers, but keep digging, and digging, throwing away the easy answers your mind and ego will frantically throw at you to distract you from reality, drag you back down into the dream.
Another trap the Seeker encounters is external reward. Ooooh! Shiny! When youve spent your life trying to get people to look at something (whether it is something about us, or something about the world) when you start getting fame, money, sex, or adulation because of some perception youve offered to the world, it is tempting to offer some version of that same perception again and again and again until youve forgotten the process that led you to that awareness in the first place, and have lost your way.
In the arts, this might be writing book after book about the same situation, or set in the same universe, or exploring the superficial aspects of some theme. Hell, you have to pay the bills, right?
And of course its true, you do, especially if you have a family. It might be wise to question the values of any artist who places his ego need to create or seek truth above the legitimate need of a child for food and shelter and security.
Navigating these waters is difficult, but necessary because we are ALL artists in one way or another, and our primary work of art is the lives we live. The artistic works, careers, physical bodies, and relationships are just external expressions of the lives we live from day to day, our day to day actions are the result of our beliefs, values, and emotional charges, and these things are the result of our relationship to Truthwhatever actually is and the degree to which we are in alignment with it.
Milton Erickson achieved miracles with his clients because he believed that, no matter what people said, what they really wanted were simple things in alignment with basic human nature: safety, security, sensual comfort, maturity, love, connection, success, health, a thriving family, self-possession, and graceful aging. It is reasonable to suspect that he regarded any denial of these things as lies the client told him, until proven otherwise.
I dont want a relationship.
Im satisfied with my body as it is.
I dont want money
Im not afraid of anything.
It is reasonable to look at Ericksons pattern, or the Chakras, or Maslows hierarchy of needs as normal, healthy, and typical, and divergences from them as extraordinary and potentially maladaptive.
That that is truth, and that the stories people tell about not wanting those things are mostly interesting lies.
And as we explore the lies we tell ourselves, the lies others tell become more obvious, and an entirely new level of human understanding opens.
But by the way confronting people with what you see is the FASTEST way to destroy relationships, unless you have permission. There is nothing harder than finding companions genuinely committed to the truth. Trust me.
This search, the quest to learn what is True or who am I are universals. All human knowledge can be subsumed under one or the other category. And the further you get from the core questions, the more trivial the answers become, the more likely that these are mere entertainments, side-lines, distractions for children. Cotton candy. Nothing wrong with cotton candy, as long as you dont mistake it for genuine nutrients.
Nothing wrong with lies, as long as you dont mistake it for truth.
If you want to deepen your art, your life, your search for love or protection of the relationships you currently have with others or Self, simply ask what is true and who am I? and continue to ask until you run out of language and arrive at answers of deep elegance and calm simplicity. And then go deeper.
Dreams are sweet, but they burden us, and morph into nightmares without warning.
The Truth will set you free.
Namaste,
Steve
