Back to Banff

Going North! Im going to give a talk at the world renowned Banff Centre, a conference precisely described, "Perfecting the Mix of Story, Character & Interactivity."

The Banff New Media Institute’s Accelerator program and the Digital Media Association of Alberta present Perfecting the Mix of Story, Character, & Interactivity. This two-day workshop targets gaming studios that aim to create successful interactive experiences that rival a movie’s level of depth and engagement. With key speakers Ronnie del Carmen from Pixar Animation Studios, Kris Pearn from Sony Pictures Animation, and Josh Staub from Cyan Worlds, Inc./Jubilee Studios.

Ive gone to the Banff Centre before and I had such a wonderful experience and met so many great folks that I had to take them up on the invite this year. Im bringing the presentation my fellow story leads at Pixar and I presented at the Screenwriters Expo last year. Maybe get a hike in there somewhere as well (look at them surroundings, you just gotta). Ill report back on how things go this year.

Babu Ram Bhattarai To Start Consultancy

Baburam Bhattarai is the 36th and Prime Minister of Nepal. He is Prime Minister of Nepal since August 2011. He is at present in the position.

B P Introduces Low Salt Water to Enhance Oil Extraction as part of Shetlands oil boom

As part of an anticipated massive oil boom in the Sheltlands, along with a revamping of the Sullam Voe terminal (confirmed just last week), B.P. intends to use a desalination plant to reduce the salt content of seawater so that it can more effectively flush oil from the surfaces of the rock reservoirs that contain it. http://www.bp.com/extendedsectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9044064&contentId=7077181If the process can increase the amount of oil recovered by another 4%, from a current average of 35%, this will mean a substantial increase in output across the industry. Applied to the Clair Ridge field, which is in the North Sea off the western Sheltand islands, it is thought that, over the lifetime of the well, 640 million barrels of crude oil might be recovered using untreated sea water, but that 42 million barrels, over and above this, could be made available using the low-salt water. The cost of the desalination plant is $120 million, which will add $3 to the cost of a barrel of oil.

Crude oil contains a wide range of molecules, many of which are charged or polar. In the B.P. research laboratories at Sunbury on Thames, in the south of England, it has been discovered that the oil molecules form chemical bridges with doubly charged cations, such as Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ that are present on the surfaces of clay particles in sandstone. At the normal salt concentrations in seawater (3,500 ppm), the oil molecules are compressed close to the mineral surface, so preventing access by free cations that are necessary to displace the Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ cations and thus free the oil from the surface. As the salt concentration is reduced, the thickness of the thin film of water between the oil molecules and the surface increases, through an effect known as “expansion of the electrical double layer”, and permits access of free cations from the seawater. This releases the oil molecules from the rock surface.

For the method to work, two criteria must pertain: (1) the total salinity of the water must be low enough to relax the electrical double layer compression, and (2) the dipositive cation concentration needs to be lower than that of the reservoir water. Together, these factors allow most of the oil to be released that is bound to the reservoir surface by this mechanism. B.P. uses water flooding to recover 60% of its oil, and it is predicted that the low-salt (LoSal®) method might increase production over the company’s holdings by 700 million barrels.

This latest development is part of a predicted new oil boom in the Shetland Sullom Voe oil terminal, for which £300 million ($480 million) worth of investment is expected.The manager of the terminal confirmed only last week that the following projects were going ahead:
? a complete refurbishment of the plant and pipework.
? introduction of a major gas-cleaning plant.
? construction of a temporary two-storey office building at Sella Ness.
? final work on the Project Aurora gas plant.
? overhaul, by its owners, Fortum, of the power station.
? overhaul of 16 giant oil storage tanks.

While only 9.2 million tonnes of oil were produced by the terminal last year, over its lifetime it has handled one-third of the British offshore oil production. The Clair Ridge development (where the desalinised water is to be employed) is expected to be a major producer, with two new platforms. Oil will be brought through the existing pipe to Sullom Voe from the end of 2016, which could continue for another 25 years, still being in operation in the 2040s.

Back to School

Both boys are back in school now. Finley started pre-K last week and Oliver started preschool today. Its really bittersweet for me. They are growing up so fast - it breaks my heart.

Im not going to lie though, its very nice to have a little time to myself and the boys *really* need the break from each other. When Finley started school last week, they immediately started to get along better and my sanity was somewhat restored. Well see how long that lasts ;)

Hello friends! I hope youre having great weeks so far. Work has been keeping me quite busy lately and Im ready for things to slow down a little bit! Im popping in today to share a little update on our dining room. Though its far from what Id call "done," Im ok with that and I figured yall would like to see some of the progress and hear about the process. After all, real life makeovers dont happen overnight!

The last time you saw a full shot of our dining room, it looked like this:

Our petite, but lovely farm table (a family piece) lived here, and we were using a secretary for storage. We knew we wanted a larger dining table to host folks for the elaborate dinner parties were planning - I kid, but seriously, we wanted to be able to have more than two people over at a time - and better storage for serving pieces, barware and china.

I hit the jackpot with a thrifted china hutch I found at my favorite local Philly spot, Uhuru, back in January, and that piece has become a workhorse. I wrote about it in this post if you want more details about it and the little DIY magic I worked on it. Youll see it a little later in this post.

Then, after months of hunting Craigslist for the perfect dining room table that my husband and I could both agree on, the Dylan table from CB2 popped up for nearly half off the retail price. It was the perfect mix between traditional farm table, mid-century modern and industrial, and we love it. Enough chit chat though, lets get to to the photos!

Can I just tell you how pretty this table is? It has a thick, solid wood top and iron hairpin-like legs. And yes, it does weigh approximately a thousand pounds (Im exaggerating, but not by much). Like true city-dwellers who dont have a large car to pick up giant Craigslist finds, we called an UberXL to pick it up and bring it home. The driver was so awesome - he even helped us carry it into the house. It was quite a hilarious scene.

It fits six to eight people, and clearly we are in need of more seating! Were contemplating doing four chairs and a bench - do yall have thoughts on a bench? I think it would look less crowded visually than having six chairs since our space isnt huge, but I worry a little bit about comfort for the folks sitting at a bench for long periods of time.

I cant get over how thick and beautiful the table top is.

If youre paying very close attention, you might notice that the china hutch swapped walls and I added some large-scale art to the wall where that piece used to be.

Ill share a little more about that art in another post, but I will let you in on a little secret: it was a DIY I put together with some acrylic craft paint and some Modern Masters Pale Gold from the Metallic Paint Collection. Theyre super simple and add a nice graphic focal point to the room.

Id say the dining room is coming right along!

Whats left to do in here? A few things:

Change out that unfortunate shiny brass chandelier for something awesome. Jurys out on what that will be, but I talked about some recent favorites last week in this post.
Figure out the seating. Id like to get four of these white Eiffel style dining chairs (*affiliate link) and a bench. My husband isnt sold on those chairs though.
Paint the radiator white.
Maybe add a rug?
