Back to Banff

Going North! Im going to give a talk at the world renowned Banff Centre, a conference precisely described, "Perfecting the Mix of Story, Character & Interactivity."

The Banff New Media Institute’s Accelerator program and the Digital Media Association of Alberta present Perfecting the Mix of Story, Character, & Interactivity. This two-day workshop targets gaming studios that aim to create successful interactive experiences that rival a movie’s level of depth and engagement. With key speakers Ronnie del Carmen from Pixar Animation Studios, Kris Pearn from Sony Pictures Animation, and Josh Staub from Cyan Worlds, Inc./Jubilee Studios.

Ive gone to the Banff Centre before and I had such a wonderful experience and met so many great folks that I had to take them up on the invite this year. Im bringing the presentation my fellow story leads at Pixar and I presented at the Screenwriters Expo last year. Maybe get a hike in there somewhere as well (look at them surroundings, you just gotta). Ill report back on how things go this year.

Back up Your Gnome Desktop and all Settings in Gnome

Neat little tool. Yourgnome allow users to backup all things relative to Gnome on your Linux Machine. Packs everything into a tar.gz into your Home folder. Also includes the tools to extract the tar.gz file so you can restore your Gnome Desktop to a your previous saved state. Ive used it and it works. I used the non GUI version when it first came out. Easy to use. Kudos to Abu Yusuf for taking the time to make it. There are 2 versions. A non GUI version that just runs in terminal. And a 2nd edition that is a GUI Version for people that just want to point and click. These are just some of the things Yourgnome will back up.

1- all your themes.
2- background you use settings.
4- gnome-panel settings.
5- bluetooth-manager settings.
6- evolution settings.
7- file-roller settings.
8- gnome-screensaver settings.
9- gnome-session settings.
10- gnome-terminal settings.
11- gnome-volume-control settings.
12- metacity & compiz settings.
13- update-manager & notifier settings.
14- totem settings.
15- network configuration set by Gnome.
16- screenlets

Before you start wondering if this works for KDE or XFCE. Sorry it is for a Gnome Desktop Backup only. Here is a example of the non GUI version when I ran it in Terminal. First I made a folder on my Desktop called "gbackup". Then I cd to my Desktop by typing into terminal. "cd Desktop" (without the quote marks please.)Then after my terminal looks like it does below. I just continue with the below steps.

How to use "yourgnome" ?

1- you dont need to install anything !, its just a bash script.

2- go to your terminal, type sh yourgnome.sh

3- choose:
1 -> Backup your gnome
2 -> Restore a backup


4- follow the on-screen instructions, its easy !

Back at Book Clubs!

Almost everyone has finished their book club project from the last book club rotation so we are finally ready to get rolling with another great book!  The excitement the students have for book clubs is AMAZING!!!  Even students who were not excited when we first started them are loving and begging to start new books.  I wish I had recorded some of their comments about book clubs!   That is exactly why book clubs are super for creating passion in reading!  So, look for students to be bringing home new books for book clubs this week.  Three groups are going strong with their new books and the other groups will get their books by tomorrow or Friday.

Some reminders about book clubs:
1.  Students are building their reading skills and strategies through reading and discussion.  This is not a sit and read type of reading.  This is a "thinking" and "discussing" type of reading (which is what reading is).
2. When students read at home they are to be using and recording their thinking by using "Reading Tracks".   Students should write and record their thoughts on post-it notes and be ready to share them the next time their book club meets.
3.  Last time students had calendars to record their book club meeting dates.  This time we are going to try to build some responsibility and have students try to remember or write a note on when their book club meets next.  We will see how that goes.  If we encounter too many students forgetting when their book club meets, we will go back to writing it on a calendar.
4.  Students are responsible for doing the reading outside of class and being ready with their reading tracks every time their group meets.  If they have read but have not done their reading tracks, they will not be able to join the discussion with their book club.

Again we will be enjoying juice and snacks when the book clubs meet.  If any parents would like to donate a jug of juice, that would be wonderful!  Just send it with your 3B student to school.

I am excited to see the students so anxious and happy to get back into book clubs!  That is what reading is all about - thinking and enjoyment!!!

Back in LA

Hey everyone. I just moved back to LA to start production on a couple of projects that my friends and I have created. Im finally in an office getting paid to MAKE OUR OWN STUFF!!
