Arthur and Pats Marshfield MA
Arthur and Pats Marshfield MA
I think if I was allergic to dairy Id kill myself - Michael Scott
I wonder if Steve Carrell improvised this line while thinking of the bread pudding french toast at Arthur & Pats, 239 Ocean St, Brant Rock, MA, Tel +1 (781) 834-9755? Apparently he is (or was) a Marshfield local, and its hard to believe you could live near this place without being drawn in for a bite, and that once bitten, your world view wouldnt be permanently and irrevocably damaged. I ate the french toast. And my world has been twisted.
What could be better than a big, fat, spongy slab of bread and butter pudding (made from recycled croissants and brioche), soaked in eggs, fried, then smothered in creme anglaise, caramel and whipped cream? What could be worse than living without it?
Well, nothing. Thats what.
Mind you, eating this stuff more than once a year will probably kill you.
Damned if you do. Damned if you dont.
To avoid this catch-22, you may want to dodge the sweet stuff and try the lobster omelet, or the filet mignon eggs benny, or the omelet with sweet roasted peppers and provolone. I tried the crab eggs benny and wasnt disappointed. Good eggs and hollandaise. A decent amount of crab. And a bonus serve of spinach.
Arthur & Pats is a diner-style venue with bunched up tables, and bar seating if youre flying solo. Its nothing fancy, but it is colorful. The walls are plastered all over with flyers describing whats on the menu. It looks like a bunch of hippies were dosed up on acid and let loose with paper, crayons and glue.
Just be sure to check your dates before schlepping down from Boston. They close from November to March.

Back up Your Gnome Desktop and all Settings in Gnome
Back up Your Gnome Desktop and all Settings in Gnome
Neat little tool. Yourgnome allow users to backup all things relative to Gnome on your Linux Machine. Packs everything into a tar.gz into your Home folder. Also includes the tools to extract the tar.gz file so you can restore your Gnome Desktop to a your previous saved state. Ive used it and it works. I used the non GUI version when it first came out. Easy to use. Kudos to Abu Yusuf for taking the time to make it. There are 2 versions. A non GUI version that just runs in terminal. And a 2nd edition that is a GUI Version for people that just want to point and click. These are just some of the things Yourgnome will back up.
1- all your themes.
2- background you use settings.
4- gnome-panel settings.
5- bluetooth-manager settings.
6- evolution settings.
7- file-roller settings.
8- gnome-screensaver settings.
9- gnome-session settings.
10- gnome-terminal settings.
11- gnome-volume-control settings.
12- metacity & compiz settings.
13- update-manager & notifier settings.
14- totem settings.
15- network configuration set by Gnome.
16- screenlets
Before you start wondering if this works for KDE or XFCE. Sorry it is for a Gnome Desktop Backup only. Here is a example of the non GUI version when I ran it in Terminal. First I made a folder on my Desktop called "gbackup". Then I cd to my Desktop by typing into terminal. "cd Desktop" (without the quote marks please.)Then after my terminal looks like it does below. I just continue with the below steps.

APPS AND MORE APPS
APPS AND MORE APPS
A now for something completely different!
Im old enough to remember the days when we all bought answering machines! Today, there is an entire generation or two who has never experienced the humiliation of a callers voice booming out loud over the answering machine.
I also remember when we all bought VCR machines. Those are those big clunky machines that we used to watch and tape movies on. Remember the days when on Saturday nights we would race to the nearby video store and stack up on a few new movies to watch over the weekend? Remember: be sure to rewind before you take the tape back. Remember late fees???
Remember BetaMax versus VHS?
I remember when we didnt have computers. And then suddenly there was a Personal Computer. But, back then there was no Internet on the computers. The Houston radio talk show host, Alvin Van Black, who was a local precursor to Rush Limbaugh, used to rant and scream about PCs. Why do we need those? To balance our check books? For what? What good are they? Theyll never last. Dont waste your money on a PC. Infamous last words.
And then, there were cell phones. Remember when we used cell phones just to call somebody to talk? Today, they are our lifeline to the world, our way to connect to a myriad of ways to make our lives easier.
Remember when none of us knew what an App was or why we needed to know about them?
Apps or applications - are the new link to the world. Its becoming increasingly harder to live without using apps, just as the oldest of us are becoming active on social media. Apps are written by both companies and individuals. Some are free, some arent, but their usual cost is rather low.
There are 1,000s and 1,000s of different types of apps, which you download on your Iphone. The problem is how do you know about popular apps? How do you know which are the good ones? Having a millennium in the family is, of course, the best way to discover new apps.
But if you arent related to a 25 year old, how might you learn about the latest useful app? I remember last year when my hairdresser introduced me to an app that I now use weekly. Sometimes a catchy news story will inform me of an app I cant live without. Sometimes I just go the Apps link and hit search.
But still I worry about all the apps out there that I dont know about and dont use. Am I unaware of an app that would change my life for the better????
I thought today I would tell you my favorite apps and hopefully you, in turn, will leave a comment telling us what YOUR favorite app is and together we will become invincible!!
Ready????
#1 Instacart
We use Instacart instead of going to the grocery store. Have you be in a grocery store and noticed all the people shopping in T-shirts that say Instacart? They are taking over our grocery stores. Sometimes there are more Instacart Shoppers than real shoppers.
Once you download the Instacart app, you put in your zip code which lets you know your shopping choices. Mr. Slippersocks Man and I are lucky enough to have fabulous choices: HEB, Whole Foods, Costco(!), Central Market, Petco & Specs.
Today when I checked my Instacart app - there were 542 coupons available to redeem!
Instacart remembers your orders so if you get the same items every week, it becomes very easy to navigate.
The groceries can come within a hour or you can schedule them for later. Be prepared to get texts from your instacarter if the store is out of something you ordered. The shopper will ask you for a substitute item.
The cost is $5.95 a trip and your tip can be automatically applied to the charge usually around 15%.
Instacart has exploded in certain cities like NYC and San Francisco and Instacart has made changes in the way they operate. Before, the shoppers just picked up the package at the curb but now in some cities the Instacarter does it all from shopping to being the checker.
Next time you are shopping at HEB or Whole Foods, look around and see if you notice anyone in a green Instacart T-Shirt.
This app is probably my #1, tied with my next one:
#2 Door Dash
OK Door Dash and Instacart share #1 as my favorite apps. Door Dash is my life saver. Again, you put in your zip code and up pops all the restaurants that your Dasher will go to. You pick out what you want to eat, type in any special instructions (like NO EGGS IN FRIED RICE!!!) (I always use many exclamation points in my eggs message!!!!) - and viola. You have dinner at your door in a half hour. Again, the fee is included in the tab, along with the size of the tip you specify. Door Dash saves your orders and this makes it easy to reorder the same thing, night after night after night. Right now, Im hooked on yes- Fried Rice from P.F. Changs. The fee varies.
You will get updates from your driver as he picks up your order and as he approaches your house. I cant recommend Door Dash enough!!
#3 FAVOR
With the success of Door Dash and Instacart, there are a plethora of different apps that deliver all kinds of things to the house. They all have different fees and tips and they work in different cities and go to different stores. So, play around until you find the one that satisfies your needs.
I love Favor. Its exactly what it says. Someone does you a Favor! If you dont feel well and need your meds from CVS or Walgreens, call Favor!!
Favor is based out of Austin and the cool thing about them is they really will go anywhere, even if it isnt listed. Just ask. You talk directly to your Favor runner and they will bend over backwards to get whatever you want.
In a world where delivery apps have exploded, Favor broke out ahead of the pack and is now very popular. There are no mark-ups on the goods. You pay a small delivery and service fee plus a tip.
Try them, they are great!
#4 POSTMATES
Postmates is another delivery service in a host of cities many, many cities. You might try them if you live where others apps arent. They have deals to places like $3.99 to 49 places from drive-thrus like Starbucks to restaurants to Walgreens to grocery stores.
#5 grubHub
Grubhub has been around a long time and is now in over 1,000 cities including London. For food deliveries.
#6 UBER
Everyone probably knows about Uber and probably uses it too. Sometimes I think I should just sell my car and use Uber its so easy and reliable. Uber takes the place of a taxi service, except they use their own regular car. Uber has been watching apps like Instacart deliver groceries and dinners and thought, hmm, we have all these cars and drivers, why not? So we now have:
#7 UBEREATS
The same as most other food delivery apps, Uber Eats is all over the world including Australia and Canada and in cities like Dubai and Amsterdam. It will probably eventually be the largest food app since they already have such a running start.
Now that you never have to leave your house to shop for groceries, pick up coffee and prescriptions, or go out to dinner what about the bank?
#8 Bank of America
I bank at Bank of America and Im always using their app to bank at home. All my checks get scanned in my phone, saving me that long line in my car! Its so convenient! Im totally addicted to it. I use to hang onto to birthday checks forever and my mom & dad would call, did you ever cash that check we gave you for your birthday? Its messing up our bank statement!!
Now, I just scan in my checks immediately.
And its wonderful to keep up with your bank balance 24/7 well, maybe that is NOT so wonderful! But with a few swipes of my phone, I know exactly what my bank account is up to.
#9 PayPal
Ive used PayPal since I started to make internet purchases. Its an online bank. If someone owes you money from another city, they can just deposit it into your PayPal account. Now, with the PayPal app, it alerts me every time an automatic payment goes out, like to Netflix or to the NYTimes Online. With the phone app, Im kept up to date on all those payments either coming in or going out, so I can act on them immediately.
#10 kindle
Dont even get me started on kindle! Remember when we used to have to have a dedicated kindle Reader? Then we all got Ipads. Now I just read my kindle books on either my computer or my phone. And I LOVE the feature where you can listen to the book!! I just turn on my kindle app on my phone when I drive and listen to the latest Outlander Book Im reading. (Still!) Sigh. No more REAL books for me, only kindle ones. The only ones I buy these days are Decor books. Its sad to realize that books are going to be a thing of the past one day soon.
And then there are magazines.
#11 zinio
I subscribe to all my magazines via the internet through zinio. I have the phone app which alerts me when a new issue is delivered. Many times Ill look at it quickly on my phone. Many times Ill never go back to look at it again. Have you noticed that the magazines free blogs are sometimes so much better than the magazines????
Lets see of course you know all about social media apps like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. For a while I was seriously hooked on Snapchat, but how many times can you watch Kylie Jenner put her new lipstick line on her wrist??? Im done with it.
#12 Walgreens
The Walgreens App is a huge, huge time saver. It keeps up with all your pills and lets you know when you are due a refill. To order a prescription, you can just scan the bottle into your phone, or type in the number. It lets you know when to come pick it up. With someone like Mr. Slippersocks Man who takes about 30 pills a day he is addicted, not to the medicine, but to our Walgreens App!!
#13 HAR.com
And then there is the Houston Area Realtors.com App. I cant live without this one. See a cute house for sale? Just swipe the HAR.com app on and it tells you all the details, including showing the pictures of the house you just passed! I love it and use it all the time when Im driving around Houston.
#14 My Fitness Pal
There are a number of other apps I use, but some, not as much. My Fitness Pal is great if you are dieting. It keeps up with all the steps you take, along with calories, etc. I loved using it with my diet
that lasted all of one week!
#15 Daily Mail
I LOVE Daily Mail for quick Hollywood Gossip and for general news. They have two sections. Its not the New York Times, but for a quick recap of national news and Hollywood its the best.
#16 Zillow

Asus EEEPC 701 and 900 Anshuls Theme Manager ATM
Asus EEEPC 701 and 900 Anshuls Theme Manager ATM
I can only report that this theme manger works great in Asus EEE PC 701 and 900 Xandros EASY DESKTOP Netbooks. Because this is Soooooo Neeeeew that these are the only 2 Netbooks so far that this script has been tested on. Anybody with a Asus Xandros Easy Desktop should try this script out. I run it on my Xandros Easy Desktop and it is the bomb In my opinion. Gives you a way to change wallpapers and themes and icons and also give a bouncy icon Mac look via a GUI interface. Simple to use also.
Here is what the author (a really good guy) of this script has to tell you about this
ATM-the theme manager for my eeepc
For my eeepc vanity needs i used to use theemer a wonderfully designed application with great gui. However,of late,i have not been using theemer as there is a bug in it on using gradient based images for the tabs in AsusLauncher the text on the tabs disappear which seems to be due to resizing of images in theeemer.I like changing my desktop look often and since i was unable to get theemer to work the way i wanted it to , I decided to make my own little script with gui using gtkdialog .
More Here
If you use his script to change your wallpapers or whatever in Easy Desktop on your Asus EEE PC Netbook. Please take the time to thank him and let him know you appreciate his hard work. If running something other than a 701 or 900 Asus EEE Let him know it works on your model or what doesnt work so he can incorporate it. He did that for me on my 900 when I tested his script. He is a very nice guy in my opinion also. I love my customized Xandros Easy Mode Desktop.

The second screenshot shows the difference between Anshuls older version 1 script and now his latest which I used which is Version 2.2. Notice how I changed the Desktop icons and how the taskbars look now between the two different versions and screenshots. I think Anshuls (thanks man) script is the bomb!
Update: Anshuls site has moved.
Update: He has another new site also

Art and creativity
Art and creativity

Lately I have this new bug. Art. I mean, Ive touched art my whole life one way or another, but always in a second place kind of way. Looking at capoeira was more through the philosophical, warrior, sports eyes than through artistic eyes for me, although my capoeira is very much aesthetics oriented.
Now in the past couple of weeks Ive started to touch more the artistic side. It is simply what makes me tick now. I want to see beautiful capoeira with true self expression, and not only strong, quality and even communicative capoeira. Thats not enough any more.
In order to do that, and in a typical idoish style, Ive decided to get inspiration and knowledge in other places besides capoeira and to bring this into my own capoeira. Im learning a lot of diffrent artistic manifestations and their special creative touch. Im after creating something that is not present anywhere else - the most creative capoeira ever. The idea is to improve and touch every aspect of capoeira in that sense. The musical aspect, the movement and dance, Ginga, artistic interaction, Capoeira show, rythem, facial experssion, and more.
Of course there are many examples of very artistic capoeiristas over the years, (most are CDO or angoleiros, some are from old-school styles and groups) but I want to bring my own thing to the table, and this is another reason for me to cross train in other arts.
Keep tuned to future projects concerning this new craze, some photos and videos and other material...
BTW, a new workshop is being organized by us in Hacasa, a workshop of rythem and movement in an old-new context. It will be held in Hacasa during 4 subsequent Saturdays and will be instructed by Michael Feigenbaum from the Mayumana group. http://www.mayumana.com/
It will combine afro-brasilian rythems with some newer funk-hiphop feel into a dance and instrumental play. Should be a blast. Special prices for the Hacasa students and limited 15 spots for every cycle of the workshop. Keep tuned for more details, first meeting at the 14th of Oct. Registration at the office: 04-8373340. Leave a message and well get back to you. See you there.

Awesome 80s and 90s Happy Meal Toys
Awesome 80s and 90s Happy Meal Toys
Youve got to feel at least a bit nostalgic for a time when a trip to McDonalds was an incredibly exciting and highly anticipated lunchtime event. As an adult, McDonalds is usually more of a convenience affair exclusive to travel and times when were in such a rush we cant be bothered to consume anything with marginal nutritional value. As a kid, though, McDonalds was the be-all end-all of fine dining. Give us some nugs, some sweet n sour sauce for dunking, and throw in a cheap plastic toy, and wed be satiated for at least an afternoon. Our parents may have been the tiniest bit uneasy about feeding us such junk, but our immediate food coma-related nap was probably more than enough to justify their decision.
While the junk food was an essential element of the McDonalds+Children=Pure Ecstasy equation, the Happy Meal toy was a critical ingredient of our satisfaction. The french fries were oily and delicious, yes, but they paled in comparison to the notion of receiving a brand new toy. While usually wed have to pull the old "throw yourself on the floor screaming in the toy store aisle" routine sure to humiliate our parents, in this case we got the toy no questions asked. It was just that easy.
Teenie Beanies
Following suit with the TY Beanie Babies craze of the 90s, McDonalds unleashed these "Teenie Beanies" in 1997. While Happy Meal toys are traditionally marketed exclusively at children, the Teenie Beanie promotion caught on in a big way with collectors. The toys quickly became best-selling Happy Meal giveaways, with adults and children alike lined up for cheeseburgers and nuggets. The chain actually ran into a serious issue with food wasting, as many adults were purchasing the Happy Meals solely for Teenie Beanie purposes and discarding their food in the trash. McDonalds had to actually sell them seperately with adult-sized food to satisfy the insatiable public.
McDonalds released two Beanies each week across a month-long span in April/May 1997, creating a self-perpetuating sea of hype. Every week, the hysteria would begin anew. Im sure all of the very well-paid and never-harassed counter help was so pleased.
Furby
After the success of the Teenie Beanies, McDonalds learned a thing or two about appealing to collectors. Why exactly someone feels that a toy that comes free with a burger and fries is an invaluable collectible is beyond my grasp of logic, but I guess thats why Im not a collector. These werent fully functional electronics like the original, but each variety had some special gimmick, be it a growl or an ear wiggle. McDonalds produced 80 variations of 8 main varieties for the launch in 1999, meaning eager collectors had to return time and time again to complete their stash. McDonalds 1, Childhood obesity prevention 0.
Barbie/Hot Wheels
You just dont mess with the classics. You know, even if they reinforce all types of unsavory gender stereotypes. In the eye of McDonalds toy producers, girls liked dolls, boys liked cars, and that was that. It was generally non-negotiable, though Im sure there were occasional requests for a trans-gender toy. I dont mean a Barbie with a shaved head dressed in baggy JNCOs, of course, just the girl/boy toy switcharoo. That other way would have been interesting, though.
And that commercial? Wow. Just wow. I especially like the way the tone of the voice-over and background music change when describing the fast car versus the tiny doll with styleable (!) hair. If youve got to squeeze a wealth of gender stereotypes into a single 30 second spot, you might as well give it all youve got.
Halloween Pails
I think the reasoning behind these trick-or-treat pails was something like, "If theyre not going to get anything nutritious from us, we might as well limit their eventual candy consumption by offering way-too-small Halloween candy portals." You couldnt make much of a haul with these; youd have been far better off with a pillow case. For some reason, though, we had these stacked around our house storing toys and holiday decorations for years. I cant imagine we ever ate that many Happy Meals. Perhaps my mom force-fed them to us on the condition that she could use the pails for her home storage needs. It seems vaguely possible.
McNugget Buddies
Ah, McNugget Buddies. You just dont see good fried food childrens character action figures like you used to. These days, theyre all Veggie Tales and their religious-tinted health-conscious ilk, but in our day we were more than happy to play with some anthropomorphized Chicken McNuggets. This was clearly a simpler time, or at least a time before parents had any access to relevant nutritional information.
When we were kids, apparently no one thought it was creepy for a commercial to feature a clown chatting conversationally with some juvenile chicken nuggets, reminiscing about their younger days and their first dipping sauce experiences. That sounds like a red flag to me, but obviously someone green lighted it. They are sort of cute, in a "Im going to eat you and not feel remorse" type of way.
McDonalds Food Changeables
These were like the poor mans Transformers. Theres something sort of innocent and benign about a cheeseburger that morphs into a killer robot. Its kind of...cute. In its own way. Even the voiceover guy cant take it seriously. "French fries become....FRY-BOT!" It sounds like hes trying to hold him some major guffaws. And who can blame him? That sentence is completely ridiculous.
Disney Movie Tie-Ins: Bambi, 101 Dalmations, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Hercules, Mulan....the list of cheap licensed merchandise goes on and on
Im pretty sure I had the 1988 Bambi Happy Meal toys on display on my dresser for ten years, minimum. What? They were adorable. If I could find them today,Id probably become that annoying person in the office whose desk is overtaken by tchotchkes and knicknacks (see Scott, Michael).
McDonalds acquired the licensing rights to all sorts of Disney paraphernalia, meaning whenever a new Disney movie premiered they were ready with a million tiny molds of all of its characters. I distinctly remember the 101 Dalmations toys because they haphazardly stuck Cruella in there. Who, I ask you, wants to play with a Cruella toy? We were all holding out for adorable puppies. I mustve gotten three Cruellas before I finally got my hands on a pup.
Cabbage Patch Kids and Tonka Trucks
This was our other major boy/girl specific promotion. Obviously they never got too far thinking outside the box. Dolls and Cars, Dolls and Trucks. Big leap on that one.
McDino Changeables
Weve got a similar Changeable concept here, only with...dinosaurs? Dont ask, I dont know what kind of weirdos they had in their development department, but McNuggetasaurus? Really? Is that an actual thing? To be fair, it is sort of cute, but youve got wonder the route to getting that into production.
Super Mario Bros 3
This ad is awesome. I love it. It just encompasses so much nostalgia in every beep. It manages to combine two things we loved as children (Super Mario Brothers and fast food) and combine them into a neat little package, complete with take-home toy. Well done, McDonalds.
As the promotions cycled in and out monthly, there are dozens of others I simply couldnt contain within the confines of a single post. Feel free to wax poetic about your favorites in the comments section. Just dont get too carried away; we dont want any of you inadvertently morphing into FRY-BOTS or a MCNUGGETASAURUS! Okay, okay, I admit it. That wasnt really related. I just desperately wanted to use those words again. Theyre adorable. Now knock yourselves out reminiscing about fast food freebies, kids. Its been fun.
