Baby Diary in Patchwork Tsushin

Baby Diary in Patchwork Tsushin

I have tons of things I forgot to blog about! I finally got around to taking some pictures, so here we go! This plastic bag dispenser above was made for Cotton Time magazine, No.110, (Japanese magazine). I remember having lots of fun paper-piecing those small bag blocks although at the time, I was hugely pregnant.

Cotton Time has been around since I was little, so it was really cool to see my name in it. Thanks to the editor who kindly invited me to contribute for the patchwork section.

You can buy Cotton Time magazines at superbuzzy here :)

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Next up is this great book compiled by the lovely Tricia Waddell. I am honored that several of my past projects for Stitch are featured in it including these:

This is such a nice book with a collection of all sorts of different bags. I definitely have to make the bag on the cover made by Malka. Its amazing, isnt it?

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Thanks to friends who tagged me on Instagram to let me know about my project being featured in this issue of Mollie Makes, a really inspirational magazine published in England.

It is the apron I made for my book. Pretty cool to see it in this mag!

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Lastly, this is the newest issue of Patchwork Tsushin, Japanese magazine. I dont have any project in it but...

In the preview section on the last page of the mag, between super famous stars in Japanese craft world  is a little name that may look familiar to you. The line translates.. "ayumis baby diary". That would be..... me!! I will be sharing my baby diary in this awesome magazine along with some sewing projects for babies for one year starting the issue coming out next month. This idea was brought up by the amazing editor of Patchwork Tsushin way before Honoka was born. I have been into baby sewing almost exclusively, so it didnt take me a moment to make a decision, though I admit I was a bit intimidated!

I cant wait to see this little ones picture in my favorite Japanese quilt magazine! I will talk more about it once the next issue comes out. You can score Patchwork Tsushin at supperbuzzy here or subscribe it directly from the publisher here. This magazine will not disappoint! (It always comes with some nice extras too! The current issue includes a 2014 calendar featuring beautiful quilts!)

Ok, I thought I was going to do short blogposts lol. Well...next time!!
Thanks for putting up with me!

Are Your New Hires Fitting In

Are Your New Hires Fitting In

Joann Lublin reported yesterday in the Wall Street Journal about new research regarding cultural fit of new employees. Lublin described the research of Sameer B. Srivastava, Amir Goldberg, and their colleagues. The scholars examined 10.2 million emails among 601 full-time staffers at a technology company written between 2009 and 2014. They hypothesized that language is a key element of culture at an organization. Adopting a similar communication style as your colleagues represents one key element of cultural fit. What did they find? According to Lublin,

"The review of 10.2 million internal messages found that new hires who stuck around and thrived used language styles similar to those of their co-workers. Newcomers with high cultural fit had a greater chance of advancing to managerial positions, the study found. Quitters experienced decreased cultural fit roughly midway through their tenure. But individuals with low cultural fit had a four-times-higher risk of getting fired after three years."

In short, newcomers who thrived at the organization either communicated in a similar fashion as existing employees (implying that the hiring process had screened effectively for cultural fit), or the successful newcomers adapted their communication style so as to fit in at the organization. Those that left or did not succeed at the organization failed to adapt to the way people communicated at the tech company.

AUTHORITARIAN TENDENCIES IN AFRICAN GOVERNMENT

AUTHORITARIAN TENDENCIES IN AFRICAN GOVERNMENT

Many have been wondering why most African leader's desire power so much that, they prefer to die as sit tight rulers. Even some foreign countries have accused many African leaders of this habit, something that prompted the intervention of some western countries in Cote D' ivore, thereby over throwing the sitting President Gbagbo in 2010 who supposedly lost an election.

Studies have establish that, the major reasons for the inability of many African countries like Nigeria, Ghana and others to operate an open, accountable and limited government has a long historical origin, beginning from the time of the slave trade, to the pre-colonial era where dictatorship and authoritarianism is the major.

It was observed that, as far as the present African leaders are concerned, there are three (3) immediate historical experiences they can appeal to:
1.     Pre-colonial time, where the Oba's,Emirs and other rulers combined both spiritual and political authority, therefore equated all opposition to them as sacrilegious.
2.     The colonial era, where the colonial governors as representatives after held legislative, executive and judicial authority in the colonies and preceded to treat as sedition's, all opinions and actions that tended to question the colonial domination and exploitation
3.     Finally, the post-colonial era, where the independent politicians were so desirous to inherit the privileges of the colonial masters that they did nothing to abolish the dualism of colonial rule.

Findings also show that, beyond these negative examples, younger Africans can also remember young majors and captains who rather than defend the sovereignty and integrity of their fatherland, decided to take upon themselves to ruin the land by looting the treasury and arrogating to themselves unwarranted privileges. Besides these, the present Africa youths on a daily basis watch with amusement, how their elected public office holder strample on their rights, appoint their children, friends and family members into various government positions, use the state resources to intimidate the citizens, prevent public demonstration with soldiers and security personnel, arrest anyone found in participation, tag the citizens with unpleasant names like nuisance, hoodlums, jobless etc.

With such a background even in this present dispensation, bad governance and authoritarian rule have been more visible and enduring precedents that contemporary African leaders can point to, and due to this, it may be difficult for African countries to put things right, unless quick action is taken by the present leaders to clean up the dirt.

From Nigeria to Ghana, Zimbabwe to Egypt and all across Africa, this subject is very visible. Even the African citizens themselves today join hands with outsider to oust a sit tight ruler. We can see the example of Libya, Egypt and so on.

But my question is,why is it still difficult for the colonial west to leave power to the African states, if they themselves are not to be referred to as sit tight masters?

Before i go into that proper, let's first ask, who is the leader of United Kingdom? Its the queen. A life time ruler. If United kingdom with all its civilization can accept the queen as its life leader,why bother about sit tight rulers in Africa? If Saudi Arabia can accept king as its life ruler, again, why bother about sit tight rulers in Africa?

Using Nigeria as a case study, if Britain, who claimed to have given Nigeria independent over 50 years ago still could not leave Nigeria alone to govern itself, what makes it different from an African leader who prefer to sit tight to power? Is the sit tight African leader not simply following the example of the colonial masters who initiated the sit tight ruler ship style of coercion and brutality?

It was on record, that Nigeria suffered greatly in the hand of Britain for over 50 years during colonialism, where all the work is being done by Nigerians, on the land owned by Nigerians, but the profits of the work done by Nigerians on Nigerian soil shall be transported to Britain. These went on for over 50 years, where Nigerian resources were channeled in to developing Britain at the detriment of the Nigerian people. But after the said Britain gave Nigeria independent in 1960, 50 years after, they still couldn't leave Nigeria alone to govern itself, but instead, continue to threaten the nation in so many ways and interfering in its internal affair like we saw recently about the anti-gay law passed in Nigeria. What could that be if not a sit tight master ship if I could use that word? Yes, sit tight rulers are not good, in fact, they are bad.But the intervention of any foreign influence in whatever disguise is even worst.

Point of note: if the African sit tight ruler favors the foreign western nation that is interfering, they would never interfere to oust the ruler unless for a greater benefit to their interest and not the interest of the African citizens, so why accept an intervention of a worst evil to oust a smaller evil?

Example can be seen in the recent bill of the Nigerian National Assembly, criminalizing same sex marriage which was threatened by Britain, U.S and others. If all these countries would not leave Nigeria alone to govern itself, how can Britain condemn an African sit tight ruler who is only following the path created by them and others?

History have it that, The Nigerian politicians who lead in the first and second republic where to take the major blame for the present situation. if the central and dominant figures holding executive positions in national policies had used their dominance in favor of the public good or to promote worthy national objectives and goals, Nigeria would have had worthy examples to follow,but this was hardly the case. The key figures of Nigeria's first and second republic were never certain as to whether they were acting as champions of their various regions and ethnic groups or as leaders of Nigeria. Thus, while each professed democratic inclinations in their speeches, few were willing to respect the opinion of the masses as well as follow the words coming from their own mouth, which is the replica of the British colonial ruler ship style.

In my opinion, independence was only taken from Britain, but the Nigerian people were still under the colony of those who inherit the colonial structures. If the Nigerians of today continue to follow the path of these old politicians, it would be difficult to achieve the aim of a united nation of a free citizen with developmental capacities.

These explain the reason why both the first and second republic collapsed for self-same reason, i.e. unwillingness of leaders to respect the will of the people at national and regional elections, the desire to remain in power despite the verdict of the electorates.

Another point of note: neither the nationalists who took over power from the colonial administrations nor the military officers who took over where prepared psychologically, politically, and economically to promote democracy and good governance, they were rather trained or schooled, the authoritarian style of the colonial masters.

The authoritarian nature of African leaders was schooled through the colonial masters, where the colonial masters coerced the Black Africans into forceful submission. Since these present African leaders inherit the structure of the colonialists, it is no surprise that they also inherit the sit tight nature of their then masters.

In my opinion, the sit tight rulers in Africa are merely imitating the western colonialists, because despite the independent given to most African countries, no African country has been loosed from the structural tie with its colonial masters as designed by them.

So, seeking the assistance of any western nation to intervene in time of any crisis, especially that which involve government, election and overthrow of government is a suicide mission. A means of giving legitimacy to those who are indirectly aiding or benefiting from the the crisis underneath.

At this junction, it is worth to note that, no foreign solution can solve a traditional problem; and every internal challenges can only be solved by an internal and all inclusive solution.

African reasons for supporting foreign intervention is simple, getting a solution to our present challenges, but no any foreign intervention had ever solved the challenges in the real sense, it instead escalate ethnic hatred, trigger internal struggle which would ensure that there is continuous crisis to always require their input for self-benefits.

We should learn to see beyond our present needs and challenges, but look into the future and the safety and development of our nation.

Athena Diagnostics Sues Mayo in Case That Implicates Patent Eligibility Doctrine

Athena Diagnostics Sues Mayo in Case That Implicates Patent Eligibility Doctrine

On June 2, 2015, Athena Diagnostics sued Mayo Collaborative Services (the Mayo Clinic and its associated reference laboratory) in the District of Massachusetts for infringement of US patent number 7,267,820. On its face, the patent is assigned to two European entities, Isis Innovation Limited and Max-Planck, but Athena represents that it is the exclusive licensee of the patent.

The patent claims methods for detecting antibodies to a protein called muscle-specific tyrosine kinase (“MuSK”).  The method is useful as a diagnostic for certain rare forms of an autoimmune disorder, Myasthenia gravis, that is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies directed against the patient’s own MuSK. Athena offers quantitative testing for the presence of MuSK-associated autoantibodies.

According to the complaint, prior to May 19, 2015, medical practitioners associated with Mayo utilized Athena for quantitative detection of MuSK-associated antibodies. However, Mayo has developed its own in-house tests for the autoantibodies, and as of May 19, 2015 it has directed its practitioners to use its in-house test instead of Athena’s. This is analogous to what happened in the case of Prometheus v. Mayo, where Mayo originally utilized the patent owner’s diagnostic test but then, presumably as a cost-saving measure, switched over to their own internal testing procedure.

Patent eligibility could become a significant issue in this case. Athena is clearly cognizant of this fact, emphasizing in this complaint that its patented methods “involve using man-made chemical reagents capable of detecting antibodies to an epitope of” MuSK. The illustrative independent claim in the patent recites:

1.       A method for diagnosing neurotransmission or developmental disorders related to muscle specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK) in a mammal comprising the step of detecting in a bodily fluid of said mammal autoantibodies to an epitope of muscle specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK).

The claim seems to implicate patent eligibility concerns, particularly in the event a court were to find that the presence of autoantibodies to MuSK in a patient’s body fluid is a natural phenomenon, and that the claim does not include sufficient additional inventive attributes to qualify for patent protection. The patent also includes a number of dependent claims that recites methods of performing the test with a greater degree of specificity, including the use of labeled antibodies. However, if the court follows the path set by Myriad II and Ariosa Diagnostics, it could very well conclude that these methods for detecting the autoantibodies are too conventional, and not sufficiently inventive, to render the claims patent eligible.

Of course, we are still waiting to hear what the Federal Circuit has to say about the district courts decision in Ariosa Diagnostics. But the present lawsuit between Athena and Mayo is one to keep an eye on for those interested in the patent eligibility of diagnostic methods.

     Heeey everyone! Its been sooo long since I had an outfit post. Ive been MIA for the last 5 months because I was busy traveling the world, exploring Turkey and making memories for a lifetime! If you didnt know, I was with an Erasmus scholarship in Malatya (middle of nowhere city) / Turkey. If you are interested in my journey, be sure to check out our Youtube channel, I vlogged almost every week!
     Now, lets talk about my outfit. Since I spent all my money on traveling in Turkey, I came home like a homeless, threw away some of my clothes and the others were so worn out. Of course, I had to go shopping for new ones. I spend almost two weeks shopping, and I was lucky enough to be in Cluj when sales hit Zara. I found so many amazing things there, like this amazing floral print skirt and the white crop top. I tried to buy things that I could easily wear in Turkey since I am planning on going back there and I didnt have any summery clothes that would cover up most of my body. So be prepared for loads of palazzo pants and crop top outfit posts!
     These pictures were taken in Carei, a tiny city in the west of Romania. As soon as I got home, I knew I wanted to spend more time with my mom, since I am gonna leave soon for a trip to Germany after which I am gonna move back to Budapest for another summer. Yesss, life is kinda hectic, but if not now, when? So I spent my days with my mom, traveling, going to opera/ballet/concerts and doing other fun mother -daughter bonding activities. What you should know about Carei, there is an amazing castle which serves as a museum. If you ever visit the region, be sure to take a pit stop there, you will not regret it. If you want to see photos of the place, check out my Instagram!

PS: Yep, I have allergies on my legs. I dont have Photoshop so deal with it! :))

Hope you have an awesome weekend!
xoxo,
Saci

Assignment Operator in Java

Assignment Operator in Java

It is a kind of operator which has a wide use in any programming language and as it name suggest it is used to assign value to a variable and that value may be a direct value or a variable or we can say that it is used to assign value in the memory. That means there are two of assigning value to a variable .It a binary operator.

Syntax:-
<variable_name> = < value >;

1> Direct way :- It means we are directly assigning value to its typed variable.
for ex-
int    x  = 10 ;
float    x  = 10 ;
char   x  = A ;

1> Indirect way :- It means we are Indirectly assigning value to its typed variable.Means we are assigning a variable to another variable. We are using this concept while swapping two numbers.
for ex-
int    y  = 10 ;
int    x  = y ;

Note:  While assigning make sure that the value should be assignment compatible to the variable type.
That means any integer value can be store to any int type variable it may be byte,short,int or long.
And also make sure about the range of any   type because value must be within the range of variable type.

If we want to store the int value in the byte ,char or short then we must take care about the range.
for ex- Byte cant store any integer value below or above its range . Means it cannot store below ( -127 ) and above ( 128 ).
for ex-
byte   y  = 129 ; // Compilation error , 129 is not in range of byte type.

While assigning any value  to the variable also take care of memory , i means to say that if you need to store value " 128 " then it can easily accommodate in byte a variable so dont take a habit of using int only because unnecessarily it will occupy more memory.

Let me tell you some of the useful and interesting cases while assigning any value to a variable .

1> Cant store a integer value to a byte type even if result value of within its range.
byte   x  = 20 ;
byte   y  =  x   +  10 ;

While compiling the above code it will give compilation error. Now think why?
It is because here in the 2nd line we are adding a  byte value to the a int type and int type is a wider type as compared to byte type so the return value will be a int type, so compiler will search for a int type variable but here it is a byte so we cannot store a integer value to a byte even if the value is within its range.

In java by by default any integer value is int type.

2> We cannot store a two byte value in a byte type if it exceeds its range.
byte   x  = 200 ;
byte   y  = 20 ;
byte   z  =  x   +  y ;

It will also with compilation error because the result value after adding is " 200 " which exceeds its range. So even if two byte value cannot accommodate into a result byte type if it exceeds its range.

So like above there are many cases you come across while coding.
Interestingly, if we define any value as a constant which is with the use of " final " keyword in java then we will come across some interesting fact while storing values. I mean to say that here in the first case, 10 is by default int but if we make to it a constant then that code will not give any compilation error, we will see in details in the final keyword topic later in this tutorial.

Back in the Studio

Back in the Studio

It is often difficult to get jump-started in the studio after being away for a while.  I have numerous go-to methods of handling re-entry, and the all revolve around realistic expectations.  I expect to feel awkward and ham-handed, I expect all my inspiration from the photos I took to evaporate as soon as I put brush to paper or canvas.  Sound familiar?  I think we all develop our little tricks of the trade for getting re-energized in the studio.   The Five-Minute Painting is a good one.  As is painting to music.  These are all about process, staying in the moment, and not getting precious about the outcome.  This time I just used some starts I made in early May, which you can see here, and used familiar collage and painting techniques to take them a bit further.  Easy size (10"x10", comfortable colors, and techniques that are well within my comfort zone.

"Land Line #1";  This one is actually a knock-off of a painting I did in 2013 as part of my Fresh Paint Friday series.  See the video here.

High Tide #1

High and Dry #1
While doing these I was not actually looking at my reference photos, but I can see bits and pieces of them in the work.  The color or seaweed and rocks, the fog, of course, and the ladder image from the wharf at low tide.  Here are a few more reference photos not posted previously:
