Art Love Lauren Mabry Abstract Ceramic Artist

Art Love Lauren Mabry Abstract Ceramic Artist

Well, well well. Its been far too long, my friends.

Almost three years ago I accepted a part-time position in the travel industry, a very long and involved story. It was not the best time, I was quite busy with clients, but such a great opportunity I accepted, thinking I could "do it all" - why do we do this to ourselves?! It became much more than part-time, and really began to take over the part of my life that allowed me to blog and pursue my true passion, which is design and colour. That incredibly hectic lifestyle also led to a move and several other life changes.

So. Although this family loves the benefits of highly affordable travel, a decision was made this summer to drastically scale that back in order to get back to my true love, which is this!

Hope you will all join me as I venture back into the blogosphere… there have been so many luscious things happening, and I have a backlog of about a million interesting bits bookmarked for blog posts!

The first of which is the work of Lauren Mabry. A combination of abstract paintwork and ceramic, Lauren has taken the humble cylinder and wall plaque to another level. Top of the wish list, friends!

Rather beautiful, arent they? I love the originality here. Nothing got under my skin more as an art student than a professor insisting on doing things the "correct" way. Art is about taking a medium and making, about putting a little bit of your soul into something. When artists throw out the rulebook they share gorgeousness like this with the rest of us…

Now just need to work out how to add an installation like above into the budget, lol!

Best, Anne-Marie

Artist Spotlight Yosiell Lorenzo

Artist Spotlight Yosiell Lorenzo

Yosiell Lorenzo is a California-based artist who creates works that are right up my alley. Inspired by old world Victorian New England with a haunted twist, Yosiells illustrations and sculptures are extremely beautiful works of art. Some of you may know this but at university Im majoring in Art History and History and when I get a chance to talk to artists about their work it is super exciting for me. When he offered to send me one of his prints I was thrilled and said yes.
The print comes in this photograph folder which has a beautifully labeled title for the illustration, Belfry and His Familiar. The print is five inches by seven inches and the card is just a bit larger than that. I love this photo format. Of course, you could take the print out of the folder and put it in a frame on a wall but I love how it looks just propped up like a card on my bookshelf. This style of presentation was a common 19th century technique which you can read more about on here to give you a basic primer.

The print itself is beautiful with impeccable detail, no graininess or pixelation to the reproduction. The sepia color and the figures position really brings to light the nineteenth century influence and its an extremely beautiful and charming image. Its the writer in me that likes to wonder about Belfry and the bat and about their story and Yosiells website doesnt say much which just makes me wonder even more.
Another one of Yosiells paintings.

I just finished my art history finals so pardon me if Im at a loss of words for this but one of the qualities that I really love about Yosiells work is how it has a vintage folk-art feel to it. Its not just the sepia as you can see it in his paintings as well, but the almost smoky, sketchy quality of the art really evokes that period for me. If youve ever been to New England and spent a lot of time wandering around antique shops and estate sales like I have you might know what I mean.

Yosiells artwork has a lot of variety to it beyond just these cabinet cards that I love. His paintings have a lot more color to them but retain their own interior personalities that makes his work so interesting. He is also the creator of the Sicklings, a series of fantasy-themed sculptures that are very endearing in their own creepy way.

So, if youre interested in seeing more of the artwork of Yoseill Lorenzo I really do encourage you to like him on Facebook and follow on Twitter and Instagram. You can also check out his sculptures and prints at his Storenvy, including this Belfry print.
(Also, isnt this business card amazing? I couldnt help but stick in a picture.)

Artist Kim Davies

Artist Kim Davies

If youve ever left a comment here,
you know that "they are my favourite part of blogging"...
thats what its all about right?

Sometimes its hard to hear what others have to say,
but Id rather hear the bad with the good than hear nothing at all.

Most days :)

So when someone new drops by I try to go by their blog
to see what wee bit of wonderful is happening over there..

Last week Kim Davies left a note about the post, Setting Your walls Free.
She mentioned being an artist, so naturally I went straight over to her blog, Inspired Lines,
(nothing better than procrastinating over art, is there?)
which led to her gallery....
and you are going to be glad I did!

How about this....

and this....

 and this....

and if the eye candy isnt enough to draw you in,
the day I passed through she had posted an online tutorial about line drawing -
how generous is that?

Ive actually never seen an artist offering up the technical bits of their brilliance before. Ever.
Immersed in all this brilliance, I couldnt help myself..
I bought these two drawings (originals!)
and a print of Lip Service...

She also has a giveaway going on....

Im sure youve all left by now, but if not, hope you have a splendoriffic thursday - x
