Archie At 18 Months

Archie At 18 Months

I took these pictures of Archie the day he turned 18 months and they really capture everything about hes cheeky personality and boundless energy at this stage. Im going to do a full video for his 18 month update soon, so watch out for that. But I just wanted to share these pictures with you and document some of the little things about him at this age.

At 18 months hes really starting to develop his individual personality, and I find myself looking at him so often thinking that my baby is now a little boy! He has the cheekiest of smiles but boy can this kid frown! I guess he takes after me for that one judging by the lines Im getting on my forehead! Hes very sweet and kind natured, and is so gentle with our dogs Miley and Pip, and likewise them with him which is such a relief! He loves to give them treats and often throws them food from his highchair which he thinks is hilarious!

Archie was never the cuddliest of babies, as Ive mentioned a few times before, hes is CONSTANTLY on the go, never wanting to sit down and goes from one thing to the next every few minutes, which according to his Nan, I have Rik to thank for that! But over the last month or so, Ive noticed hes slowed down a little, he has a slightly longer attention span and will even sit and watch something on the TV for about 10 minutes at a time! The best thing though is Ive suddenly got a very cuddly boy! I dont know if its due to him being ill a few weeks ago which made him realise that sitting and having a cuddle is actually quite nice, or the fact that hes worked out that kisses and cuddles get him things! (Im all for bribery!) Whatever it is though Im enjoying it and hope this continues!

Hes walking really well now, although he still sometimes resembles a tiny drunk man, especially when hes tired. One of the things Im really enjoying is seeing his language develop! I cannot wait for the day when we can have proper little conversations. for now his favourite words are; Beebies (Cbeebies), Chitchen (Kitchen) Pat Pat (Hes Great Gandad) and most recently MUM!. Hes said mama since quite an early age but for a while everything was Daddy, so Its nice to feel important for once.

Weve been incredibly lucky with hes sleeping. (I know how annoying that must sound if youre struggling with this at the moment). He just loves his sleep and generally goes to sleep at around 7:00pm and sleep through the night until 8:00am. I have just completely jinxed myself by writing this down though. Especially as I know were about to hit another teething stage.

Hes current favourite things are:

Justins House
Twirlywoos
fruity bakes
pudding
oranges
climbing on everything
cars
bears
trains
playing with water
stickers
scribbling

Im basically just head over heels in love with him and Im so lucky to be his Mum. I know Ive only really touched on the positives here which can can make it seem like being a Mum is easy and Im trying to say my child is perfect. Thats not the case at all, it can be exhausting and really hard some days! Im sure Ive left loads out, so if you have any questions, then please leave them below and Ill try and incorporate them into the video!

Love Kate x

At the Seaside

At the Seaside

Here i am again...home from the seaside and feeling very refreshed :) ........
.............we spent a lovely week with family and friends on the sunny isle of angelsey.....
.............my husband sailed in the regatta and we watched the boats set off into the blue waters of the straits each day...or sometimes the grey waters....but always lovely to watch......the scenery in the background, on the other side of the straits is beautiful snowdonia..........
.............this is the lucky dip quilt that i began this time last year.......it has been finished for ages and was longarm quilted for me quite a while ago too......it was the perfect quilt to use at the seaside, with its gorgeous daysail fabrics by bonnie and camille...............
.............i really love the boats on white for the backing fabric..............the central panel is made up of snowball blocks and the wide border is ta dot in ocean by michael miller.......
..............this year we stayed in a different house in beaumaris....a tall old house overlooking the straits...........it was amazing to wake up to this view each day and we were all mesmerised watching the boats and the seabirds through the large windows...........
..............below is a view through our bedroom window at low tide................
..............as always when we visit beaumaris we love to see the janet bell gallery......and this year it was twice as good as there are now two janet bell galleries :).............below is the brand new one through the archway, light and bright and filled with janets paintings..... it has such an uplifting atmosphere...............
..............the earlier gallery is filled with treasures too....stocked with the work of 60 other artists, designers and makers.............below is one of the stylish windows freshly painted with gorgeous grey......you might be able to see some blue striped mugs in there and i might have bought those......
...............below is a detail from a new painting by janet bell called beaumaris bay.......we loved this especially as it shows a fleet of boats sailing out to puffin island.....i bought this painting for mr p (and me!)...............i had some other treats from the galleries too which i will show you soon....and when the painting is hung in its new place ill show that too.................janet was very busy painting in her studio but took a little time out to come and have a coffee with me.....x
..............there are lots of flowers blooming on the island, both in gardens and growing wild along the coast.......i found this little jug below in a charity shop in beaumaris, just waiting for me to put some daisies in it..............
.................it was a happy week being with the grandchildren too.....seeing them enjoy the seaside in the same way as we did as children.............we had a lovely afternoon here at penmon, rock pooling and finding tiny pebbles to paint on when we get home next week.............
.................and now i am home again and looking forward to getting back into my sewing room.....i have some exciting new designs to do including some quilts to make and some sweet appliques to sew and i have ordered the backing fabric for my blue checkerboard quilt so will soon be hand quilting that...........
................thank you for dropping by dear readers and for all your kind comments.............it is always such a pleasure to see you........wishing you a happy sunny crafty week.....................back soon xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Back at Book Clubs!

Back at Book Clubs!

Almost everyone has finished their book club project from the last book club rotation so we are finally ready to get rolling with another great book!  The excitement the students have for book clubs is AMAZING!!!  Even students who were not excited when we first started them are loving and begging to start new books.  I wish I had recorded some of their comments about book clubs!   That is exactly why book clubs are super for creating passion in reading!  So, look for students to be bringing home new books for book clubs this week.  Three groups are going strong with their new books and the other groups will get their books by tomorrow or Friday.

Some reminders about book clubs:
1.  Students are building their reading skills and strategies through reading and discussion.  This is not a sit and read type of reading.  This is a "thinking" and "discussing" type of reading (which is what reading is).
2. When students read at home they are to be using and recording their thinking by using "Reading Tracks".   Students should write and record their thoughts on post-it notes and be ready to share them the next time their book club meets.
3.  Last time students had calendars to record their book club meeting dates.  This time we are going to try to build some responsibility and have students try to remember or write a note on when their book club meets next.  We will see how that goes.  If we encounter too many students forgetting when their book club meets, we will go back to writing it on a calendar.
4.  Students are responsible for doing the reading outside of class and being ready with their reading tracks every time their group meets.  If they have read but have not done their reading tracks, they will not be able to join the discussion with their book club.

Again we will be enjoying juice and snacks when the book clubs meet.  If any parents would like to donate a jug of juice, that would be wonderful!  Just send it with your 3B student to school.

I am excited to see the students so anxious and happy to get back into book clubs!  That is what reading is all about - thinking and enjoyment!!!

At long last!

At long last!

Today is the last day of classes here at Mid-Tier-University, and I am indescribably happy! I am, in fact, probably even happier than my students, who are ecstatic about escaping the rigorous horror that they just realized was the difference between lower and upper division courses. Every time I think about not hearing "But why cant we just use numbers? theres an equation right there!" for the whole summer, I want to break into song. Better even than that, though, is the realization that, after grades are submitted, I have a summer -- an entire, complete, glorious summer -- to do research!

This has been an excruciating term, because for the first time I had students who resented having to think, to work, to meet expectations, who seemed to really believe that showing up was all it took (and who then seemed to think that it was appropriate to complain to my chair when it turned out that they were wrong). And then theres the gender thing -- "but youre supposed to be nice! and nurturing! Why cant I turn in late work? Youre mean!" -- where they express levels of entitlement that theyd never show to a male colleague.

The term has also been excruciating because, as hard as Ive tried, I havent been able to salvage any time for my own research, so I feel as though -- in addition to wasting my efforts and care and concern on students who wouldnt even grasp that I was doing them some favors (yes, Ill teach extra evening sessions to help you understand the material that was a prequisite for the course, but, um, yes, you need to do the reading) -- I made absolutely no progress toward tenure. I expect my evaluations will be bimodal (about half strong, and half awful, really), but the time I spent focusing on the course will be directly counted against progress securing additional external funding.

I dont think I have ever been more thrilled about a term ending. Usually Im pleased in a nebulous sense, because hey, a week of fluff reading and then more term! And I have all these great ideas for that term, and research too! (That last sentence isnt sarcasm -- its a pretty accurate read on how Ive felt in the past.) This term has taken too much out of me, and right now, the thought of teaching again -- ever -- makes me want to sob. So heres my secret: I dont want to go back. I never want to see these people again -- colleagues or students -- and I think I made a terrible mistake.

But the terms over. Small mercies, but mercy all the same.

At Peace

At Peace

I cant tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start

So wake me up when its all over
When Im wiser and Im older
All this time I was finding myself
And I didnt know I was lost
-Avicii

Did you ever watch Ally McBeal? Remember how she had theme songs for moments and life events? I love that. I totally do that. Around college graduation I blasted "99 Red Balloons" on my car stereo. Annie Lennox has carried me through some serious break ups. When we conceived Baby Fix-It my get-pumped-up-for-injections song was FloRidas "Good Feeling". And this winter, during a trying fertility process, I kept coming back to "Wake Me Up" by Avicii.

Last week we met with our new fertility doctor. I liked him. I really needed that boost of confidence. He was kind, responsive, and gave us no sense of being rushed. I especially appreciate that last part. This new fertility clinic weve been using has often left us with a feeling of being hurried and unimportant. Sure, we are one of hundreds of couples they treat each year (maybe more, I have no idea). But also, this is no small physical, emotional, and financial commitment. So taking the time to really understand our history and wishes was deeply appreciated.

I went into the appointment with thoughts on our next steps. And I was relieved the doctor was on the same page. Last Tuesday we signed paperwork to move forward with a fresh IVF cycle. Im a bit disappointed we have to go through the entire process, but we have done it before, and we can do it again. The thing with fertility treatments that has always stuck with me is this: your eggs will never be as young and healthy as they are today. So no time like the present.

Today I was already back in the stirrups. We still have to wait a bit while my uterus recovers from the D&C, but things are progressing. My body is back on track (if you know what I mean). So today they checked my HCG (it was hovering around 1 last week), estrogen, progesterone, uterine lining and did a follicle count. Ill start birth control today. This means that next month, when we start the IVF cycle, the timing will be predictable. The doctor also explained that birth control helps keep your system calm. Calm is good in the fertility world.

And so calm it is. Im at peace with where we are in this process. At  peace and simultaneously pumped up. Im taking the next several weeks to take care of myself. Going to the gym, eating well, sleep, yoga, balance. Calm. And excitement.

Ill let you know when I find my next song of the moment.

Back at it

Back at it

My stomach has been feeling much better lately and Ive been back at the workouts. Legs feel pretty good and Im trying to be smart and not bite of more than I can chew, but rather select power levels that are somewhat doable in order to get through some full workouts. Aerobically, I definitely feel at a lower level than last year. Just in my heart and my chest I can tell. Im trying not to worry about that too much as it always seem that the aerobic part is the easiest to adapt and that its the muscular part that really takes awhile with me.

Ive wisely selected 2min power levels that are significantly lower than the 1x power levels. As a recent commenter pointed out there is a big difference when going from 1minute to 2minutes. Much bigger than when going from 4 minutes to 12 minutes.

If history is an indicator my 4min intervals this week are actually a predictor of what my 10 and 12 minute intervals will be at in another month. This is a great indicator that this Morris stuff works.

So overall Ive accomplished some pretty high 1x intervals compared to last year, but all the other time interals (2, 3, 4min) have been slightly lower than last year. Which is not that bad at all considering that I am nowhere near the level of commitment and focus as last year.

At the Devils Door

At the Devils Door

Production Year: 2014
Release Date: 12/16/2014
Studio: IFC
Director: Nicholas McCarthy

Its California, its the 80s, and a poor girl has just agreed to sell her soul to the Devil.  Decades later a real estate agent named Leigh (Catalina Sandino Moreno) is attempting to sell the property that this young girl once called home.  The current owners happen seem oddly anxious to get rid of the place, could it have something to do with their missing now daughter?  Maybe the answers are wrapped up in that big wad of money the real estate agent found hidden in a dresser drawer.

Leigh is working on selling this mysterious home and runs into a very strange teen that used to live there.  This mysterious encounter could have dire consequences for the woman as number of really odd occurrences begin to stack up.  It quickly becomes clear things arent as they seem.  Is a demonic force to blame?

At the Devils Door is a very hard film to review without giving away a number of crucial plot twists.  At its heart the film is about three different women who are being stalked by the same demonic entity.  The first girl has intentionally bargained with the creature, the second (Leigh) becomes intertwined when she agrees to sell a property, and lastly Leighs sister (Vera; Naya Rivera) could very well be destined to encounter the dangerous entity.

Overall I was very impressed with the film, I felt it had a few genuine jumps, tight direction, and a cool looking monster!  I wasnt expecting a whole lot out of the film but I found it to be an interesting (and refreshing) taking on the paranormal/demonic possession subgenre.  Ashley Rickards portrays the young girl who made a pact with the demon, while her role is brief, she has a strong screen presence and I hope to see her in more future genre films.

Commentary with Writer/Director Nicholas McCarthy

Speaking of the Devil the Making of At the Devils Door (18:03) - A solid making of featurette featuring interviews with the Writer/Director Nicholas McCarthy, and a few of the actresses.

Deleted Scenes with optional Nicholas McCarthy commentary (11:38) - Six deleted scenes that were ultimately trimmed from the film for pacing reasons, included is an alternative ending.

Trailer (02:31)

At the Devils Door is a definite winner for IFC Midnight, we have a great horror flick with a competent director at the helm and a handful of nice supplements.  If youve grown weary of the modern paranormal film Id suggest you give this film a shot, I have a feeling youll be pretty impressed!

Apple crumble at home

Apple crumble at home

So my visit to the Meat & Wine Co. last time had me craving for crumbles ever since.

It was towards the end of my Easter break and I was sick of being in bed with the flu once again, so with all my strength I got out of bed and into the kitchen. Apple crumble time! It felt like sunshine after a rainy day just being up and cooking.

Crumbles are relatively easy to make and can be done within 15 minutes. However the baking time is long - takes roughly 50 minutes but this just tests your patience and really you should do something while waiting (like cook dinner) unlike me looking into the oven like a child excitedly looking into the windows of a pet store.

I like my crumbles piping hot with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream (preferably Blue Ribbons). That is exactly the way I had it, while watching The Princess and the Frog.

I *love* this recipe. It is the best crumble Ive made - the apples slow-cooked with cinnamon were not too soft and mushy and the crumble on top was just the right texture and sweetness. The tray of crumble was demolished before the movie got anywhere.

Sit and Stay Awhile Apple Crisp
recipe from Ann of Fidget

bake in an 8×8 baking dish or double the recipe and bake in a 9×13 dish
Note: I half the Topping and used 2 large Fuji apples instead.

Filling:
5 to 6 medium-size apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch slices. (About 7.5 cups)
3 tbsp granulated sugar (I omitted this as Fuji apples are sweet enough).
1.5 tsp cinnamon

Topping:
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/3 cups lightly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 stick unsalted butter, well-softened
2/3 cup finely chopped pecans (optional)
1/3 cup quick oats

Preheat the oven to 350 (~176C). Generously grease an 8×8 baking pan with butter.

Place a layer of apple slices in the bottom of the pan and dust with sugar/cinnamon mixture. Continue layering apples and dusting with cinnamon/sugar until done. Toss the apple mixture until evenly coated in cinnamon sugar. The apples should be just about to the top of the pan (they will cook down).

For the topping, place the flour, brown sugar, nuts, cinnamon and oats in a large bowl and stir well with a wooden spoon. Work the butter into the mixture with your fingertips until evenly distributed. Take one full handful of the topping and toss it into the sugared apple mixture. Spread the rest of the topping evenly over the apples. (I usually end up with a dough-like topping that I just lay on top of the apples).

Bake the crisp in the dish on a baking sheet on the center oven rack until the topping is crunchy and the apples are bubbling, 55-60 minutes.

Serve hot.

Sprinkled with cinnamon

Crumbled top before going into the oven

Nom nom nom...
