Back to School Round Up 2014

Its the first week of August, and I am in full-back-to-school- swing here at Blissful Roots. Be sure to visit all week long for all the back to school tips and ideas youll need to make the beginning of this year extra special. My boys love school, but they get the first day jitters every year, so we do what we can to make the first day of school a bit more exciting and anticipated.

I know I say this often, but Im constantly amazed at all the talent thats so readily available out there in blogland. I had intended to share just a few ideas for todays round up, but wound up with 20! I couldnt stop! I know when I taught making my room warm and inviting for back to school night was always a lot of fun, definitely some work, but totally worth it when my little first graders walked in the room and had happy, excited looks on their faces! The same goes for being a mom. I dont have a classroom any more, but I can make our home a fun and exciting place for that oh-so-important first day of school!

Back to School

Both boys are back in school now. Finley started pre-K last week and Oliver started preschool today. Its really bittersweet for me. They are growing up so fast - it breaks my heart.

Im not going to lie though, its very nice to have a little time to myself and the boys *really* need the break from each other. When Finley started school last week, they immediately started to get along better and my sanity was somewhat restored. Well see how long that lasts ;)

Back to School – Start the year right!

Heads up – this post is about my store, not my classroom. So read on if you are in need of some back to school activities – in English or Spanish.

Have you ever started a simple straight-forward project that slowly evolved into something so much bigger than you planned?! That’s what my back to school project turned out to be – a behemoth with a mind of its own.

I’m so happy it’s finally done and I can share what I’ve been up to. I know there are lots of back to school activity packs out there for you to buy. But I wanted to create something a little different. How is this different you might ask…

1. I designed it with my bilingual/dual teacher friends in mind. I wanted to create something they wouldn’t have to spend any time translating...Later I decided to make everything in English too, for my monolingual teacher friends who still want to spice up their beginning of the year!

2. These activities will “spice things up” by using “new” non-traditional back to school read alouds, AND traditional read alouds. These include two AMAZING multi-cultural reads!

3. This packet isn’t about keeping the kids occupied those first days of school. Each activity works towards the creation of something bigger – a class book!

Each pack is full of activities and comes with a PowerPoint with editable covers for your class books! In addition to creating 7 class books, students will work on a “All About Me” book. Cool, right!? Activities have been differentiated for three different grade levels! There is a reading survey, family tree activity, poetry writing, and more!

REMEMBER bilingual teachers – in the bilingual pack all activities are included in English and Spanish!

I’ve also broken up some of my favorite activities into smaller products – so if you don’t want to buy a whole pack you can get the individual activity for less $.

Back to School Essentials Brights Neons!

This summer is flying by and I have been falling behind on blogging. I have been doing a lot to keep up with organization in my room. I want to make sure this school year is neat, organized and full of color! I love a bright classroom and I am trying to put together somethings to make sure that happens.

I just ordered these very cute book bins from Really Good Stuff. The colors fit perfectly with my class which is usually filled with bright neons.

At just $13, I think its a pretty sweet deal.

I also picked up paper baskets for my centers.

Last year, I used these for center bins and my work for the week. I labeled each basket Mon-Fri and had the work all set for the students for each day. I need to find a place for them in my class this year. I am sure I will come up with something.

To keep going with the theme of brights, I picked up these neon pencils at Walmart. They were a bit expensive on my taste, but I couldnt resist. I will use them as an incentive for those well behaved kiddos!

When I finished all my shopping, I kept working. Havent worked as hard all summer. I printed out my posters from my Part of Speech set and started laminating right away.

I love the way they turned out, bright and very eye catching. My little ones will hopefully be using these posters as references and guides.

Average velocity from High School Physics and Agile Projects

Two Agile teams start working on Application A, at the same time developing exactly same functionality. Team 1 delivers with a constant velocity…

While searching on the internet about AgileEVP (Agile Earned Value Management) I came across a formula from my high school physics: v=d/t, the Average Velocity formula. I really enjoyed high school math, physics, and its exams: Two trains leave Station A at the same time traveling in the same direction, Train 1 travels with a constant velocity…

Here is the formula that got me started:

High School Physics Average Velocity

The average velocity v of an object moving through a displacement $(d)$ during a time interval $(t)$ is described by the formula: v=d/t

where,
v = Average Velocity
d = displacement
t = time

Exercise 1:

What is the average velocity for a car with a displacement of 120 km in the interval of 3 hours?

V = d/t, where d is 120 km and t is 3 h

Solution:

V = 120 km / 3 h = 40 km/h

Average velocity: 40 km/h (the car average velocity is 40 kilometers per hour)

So I decided to compare high school physics average velocity with team average velocity as an Agile development concept.

Typical Agile projects use iteration fixed in time, so instead of t, team average velocity uses the number of iterations as the time variable.

Displacement in Agile is measured by means of story points completed.

Velocity, in Agile, team velocity, means the number of story points the team completed in the Iteration.

Agile Team Average Velocity

The average velocity v of a team delivering story points (s) during the iterations interval (i) is described by the formula: v=s/i

where,
v = Average Velocity
s = story points completed
i = the number of iterations

Consider sp for Story point unit, it for iteration unit, and sp/it as velocity unit (Story points per iteration)

Exercise 2:

What is the average velocity of a team with a completion of 120 sp in the interval of 3 it?

V = s/i, where s is 120 sp and i is 3 it

Solution:

V= 120 sp / 3 it = 40 sp/it

Average velocity: 40 sp/it (the team average velocity is 40 story points per iteration)

Agile projects extensively rely on the concept of average velocity. Average velocity is very useful for agile team planning activities such as iteration and release planning. For example, my team is about to have an IPM (Iteration Planning Meeting) and we had to decide the number of story points to sign up for the next Iteration. The Average velocity from the last 3 iterations is a good initial value for the team to go about signing up for work for the coming iteration.

Back 2 School Must Haves!

So a week from today we will be meeting our new little ones. Wow summer time flew time by but I am excited to meet some new kiddies.

I finally finished my class today. So that means pics will be coming your way this Sunday! Woo hoo! I have done a few different things this year and cant wait for you guys to see.

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you some of my back to school must haves. Some of the things I just cant be without during the school year. Maybe some of you share the same ideas with me. Lets see!

My tumbler!

My absolute favorite must have!!!

This is my wedding one! I cant wait to bring it to school. Last year I started to bring a tumbler in with cold water and lemon/lime slices. Seriously, it was delicious. I dont usually enjoy water, but this kind is just so tasty. I would bring in another water bottle to refill and by the end of the day I would have drank 2 which I can only imagine being healthy. So I definitely want to continue the same tradition this year. =)

To spare a long post,

I made a collage of my favorites!

*Aside from regular sized staplers, you definitely need the mini ones! You can put them anywhere and always have them in handy. I bought a pink and purple one this year and cant wait to use them.

*Pencils! Ahh who doesnt need pencils.

Okay, really, you can never get enough of pencils, especially with the little ones. They could have 5 pencils on their desk and in a matter of 5 seconds they are crying because they cant seem to find them. So I always have pencils on hand!

*Colorful pens! I like to keep grading fun for the little ones. I think red pens (although I use them at times) can be harsh. Using colorful pens always make you smile. So I definitely need those! Plus they are cute and pretty to look at.

*Sharpies! Ugh. I feel like I need all different kinds of sharpies in my life. Thin, skinny, sharp tip, fat tip, any kind of tips! Believe it or not, you will definitely need one or the other at some point throughout the year. So why drive yourself crazy trying to make a think point look cute? I just buy all different sizes and keep them in my desk for when I need them. They are life savers!

*Finally, my favorite, chocolate. I feel like chocolate makes any one feel better. Its sweet and delicious. Is it healthy for you? Some doctors would agree its great while others say no. LOL I only listen to the ones that say they are good for ya! Its good to grab small pieces for a long day.

* I didnt put this up, but I also like to carry a travel size *advil*. Sometimes I am just not feeling my best and advil does the trick at lifting my spirits to get through the day.
