I bought some Urad dal flour back in January. I bought it because I had read a recipe then, which required it. After some days, when I again saw the recipe to make that dish, I realised that I didnt really fancy making it. (Does this happen to you too?) As a result, the Urad dal flour stayed in the pack, unopened, at the back of the cabinet...until I saw it again, when I emptied the cabinet to clean it thoroughly. This time I was determined to use it, and started looking for recipes on the net.
This thing called the internet is perhaps one of the best things to have happened to mankind in the recent years. (Now that was a pearl of wisdom, Maa Vaishali Devi!) Although I did not find too many recipes, which ask for Urad dal flour (perhaps there arent too many anyway?), the one that I found is reeeaaaally good. It is for this Dosa, Didir Dosa. I found the same recipe at a few sites. The one site, which I like the most, is this. The only thing that none of the sites told me is *why* the Dosa is called so. I am sure that one of you will know. :)
This Dosa has two very good qualities.
1) It requires no grinding at all. Which means that bachelors or people on the move or people who are just starting a household and do not have all the kitchen gadgets yet can also make great Dosas.
2) Moreover, the no-grind batter gives you perfect Dosas. I think the pictures are proof enough. :)
The recipe is very uncomplicated too. Let me tell you how.
Recipe for Didir Dosa
I do not really remember how many Dosas I made, but it made four adults so full that they almost skipped lunch. :)
Ingredients:
3 cups rice flour
1 cup Urad flour
salt to taste
water for the batter
oil for the griddle/Tava when making Dosas
Rice flour & Urad flour - Can you tell which is which? :)
Method:
1. Mix both flours and salt. Add enough water to make a soft, lump-free paste. Please make sure that it isnt too runny.
Batter to be fermented yet
2. Leave the batter to ferment for at least 8 hours or overnight. Once the batter rises, check the taste again for salt.
Risen batter
3. For making Dosas, heat a Tava. Pour a ladleful of the batter in the centre and spread it with the back of the ladle moving in concentric circles. Spread a few drops of oil at the edges of the Dosa. For step-by-step fotos, see here. Once the edges of the Dosa start *lifting themselves* from the Tava/griddle, slide a spatula beneath it, fold it in half and take it out.
If you want to serve it like the Topi Dosa that they serve in Udupi restaurants in India, make one cut in the Dosa from the centre through to the edge. Fold it with both hands to make it look like a party hat. Like this.

Serve it with this chutney or any other chutney of your choice. I served it with this.

While searching on the internet about AgileEVP (Agile Earned Value Management) I came across a formula from my high school physics: v=d/t, the Average Velocity formula. I really enjoyed high school math, physics, and its exams: Two trains leave Station A at the same time traveling in the same direction, Train 1 travels with a constant velocity…
Here is the formula that got me started:
High School Physics Average Velocity
The average velocity v of an object moving through a displacement (d) during a time interval (t) is described by the formula: v=d/t
where,
v = Average Velocity
d = displacement
t = time
Exercise 1:
What is the average velocity for a car with a displacement of 120 km in the interval of 3 hours?
V = d/t, where d is 120 km and t is 3 h
Solution:
V = 120 km / 3 h = 40 km/h
Average velocity: 40 km/h (the car average velocity is 40 kilometers per hour)
So I decided to compare high school physics average velocity with team average velocity as an Agile development concept.
Typical Agile projects use iteration fixed in time, so instead of t, team average velocity uses the number of iterations as the time variable.
Displacement in Agile is measured by means of story points completed.
Velocity, in Agile, team velocity, means the number of story points the team completed in the Iteration.
Agile Team Average Velocity
The average velocity v of a team delivering story points (s) during the iterations interval (i) is described by the formula: v=s/i
where,
v = Average Velocity
s = story points completed
i = the number of iterations
Consider sp for Story point unit, it for iteration unit, and sp/it as velocity unit (Story points per iteration)
Exercise 2:
What is the average velocity of a team with a completion of 120 sp in the interval of 3 it?
V = s/i, where s is 120 sp and i is 3 it
Solution:
V= 120 sp / 3 it = 40 sp/it
Average velocity: 40 sp/it (the team average velocity is 40 story points per iteration)
Agile projects extensively rely on the concept of average velocity. Average velocity is very useful for agile team planning activities such as iteration and release planning. For example, my team is about to have an IPM (Iteration Planning Meeting) and we had to decide the number of story points to sign up for the next Iteration. The Average velocity from the last 3 iterations is a good initial value for the team to go about signing up for work for the coming iteration.

I was in Portland, Oregon, last week teaching at Art and Soul. What a fabulous time! I had, as usual, great students in my two two-day-plus-one-evening classes, Dynamic Composition and Layering and Excavating. Plus I got a little time to tool around Portland and visit some family.
Meanwhile, I have a couple of online classes in progress. Here are some fabulous works by students in my class "100 Drawings on Cheap Paper", which started in February. I do have a couple spaces left in my 100 Drawings that starts August 31. Read about it here.

Avadon Developer Diary 1 Where Ideas Come From
Last week, after six months of hard work, we were finally able to announce Avadon: The Black Fortress to the world. Avadon is our next, all-new, Indie fantasy role-playing game. And, hopefully, trilogy. Were really excited about it. Its the first time in quite a while that were doing something really new, and these monthly development diaries will say a bit about the new series and the ups and downs of making it.So, for the first post, I wanted to write about where the idea came from. I am often asked where I get my ideas. So, if you ever wondered, here is one answer.
The First Idea
About three years ago, I saw that the Avernum and Geneforge series were drawing to a close, and I needed to come up with something new. This was, of course, both exciting and terrifying. Coming up with an idea that will determine the course of years of your life (and possibly put you out of business) is a stressful process.
About this time, my wife and I went to see a Hungarian one-act opera called Bluebeards Castle. I am normally not a fan of opera. Exactly the opposite, in fact. But some friends had cheap tickets, and we had babysitting, so, you know, whatever.
And what was it like? Well, I will quote Wikipedia.
"The basic plot is loosely based on the folk tale of Bluebeard, but is given a heavily psychological reworking—some would say psychoanalytic or psychosexual"
So you know it was a totally fun time. As far as Im concerned, an evening out is a failure if it doesnt involve the word "psychosexual."
Anyway. The opera is about Bluebeard, this incredibly scary guy who lives in this huge, dark castle. He brings home his new, young, pretty wife and is showing her around. His castle has seven doors, and he unlocks and opens them for her one after the other. Each door looks out onto some cool room or vista. Some open onto treasures. Others onto subterranean realms. Or far-away lands. (So this is already sounding like a Paper Mario game.) When each door is opened, they sing about it. At length.So then they get to the last door. Bluebeard refuses to open it. His wife begs for him to. He refuses. This goes on for a while. Finally, Bluebeard gives in and opens the door. Bluebeards other wives (!) walk out silently. They take his new wife and pull her through the door, which closes behind them. Bluebeard sings about how sad he is. Opera ends. Very psychosexual.
So Im sitting there watching this, and what Im thinking is this: Who is this Bluebeard guy? Hes very powerful. Very rich. Has a castle full of magic doors. He mentions how he has great influence with the court. Whats his deal? Where did all that wealth come from? What does he use those portals for? What is his day job?
And here was my idea. Hes a warrior. Or an assassin. Or a spy. He can go wherever the king wants, and do whatever needs doing. Something needs to be found out? Some rebel needs to die? Thats what Bluebeard does, and he is well paid for it.
Turning a Glimmer Into a Game
These ideas bounce around in my head for a few years, getting massaged into a more video-game-friendly form. And that brings us to Avadon.
In Avadon, the land of Lynauus is split in two. There is the Pact, an uneasy alliance of five nations, banded together for safety. On the other side is the Farlands, the enemies of the Pact, barbarians and monsters and old, crumbling Empires, kept weak and divided. But they long to get their revenge on the Pact. To put together armies and destroy these upstarts.
And the Pact is protected by Avadon. Avadon is a fortress in the wilds, a law unto itself, separate from the government. Its warriors are tasked to find problems when they are small and do whatever it takes to remove them. Avadon is ruled by Keeper Redbeard, the smiling, jolly, utterly ruthless master of the Black Fortress. He has been in charge for sixty years, though he doesnt appear to have aged a day.
As the game begins, you have just arrived at Avadons gates. And you have found that, after decades of steely, unbroken control, things are going terribly wrong. Redbeard wants to see you. He needs a pair of fresh eyes, and it is a bad idea to disappoint him.
And that is where the new series came from. Over the next few months, I will say more about the world and the gameplay itself.
